ABOUT THE ROLE:
The BSA/AML Analyst II is responsible for conducting moderate-to-complex investigations into potentially suspicious financial activity to ensure compliance with the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), USA PATRIOT Act, OFAC regulations, and related anti-money laundering (AML) regulatory requirements. This role focuses on analysis of escalated alerts, complex transactional reviews, and the development of Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs). The BSA Analyst II exercises moderate to high-risk ownership at the member relationship level and applies independent judgment to identify suspicious activity, assess financial crime risk, and support regulatory compliance.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
- Conducts comprehensive investigations of escalated transaction monitoring alerts, unusual activity, and potentially suspicious member behavior across multiple accounts, products, and time periods.
- Analyzes transactional patterns, account relationships, and financial activity to identify anomalies, typologies, and potential financial crime risks.
- Evaluates activity against regulatory thresholds and internal policies to determine whether activity meets criteria for suspicion and SAR filing.
- Prepares and electronically file Currency Transaction Reports (CTRs) in accordance with regulatory requirements and internal procedures.
- Performs relationship-level risk analysis, incorporating member profile, expected activity, and historical account behavior.
- Identifies and escalates emerging risks, trends, and typologies to management as appropriate.
- Prepares and files Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) in accordance with regulatory requirements and internal procedures. Drafts clear, accurate, and comprehensive SAR narratives that effectively articulate investigative findings, risk indicators, and rationale for filing.
- Compiles and maintain supporting investigative documentation to ensure a complete and auditable case file. Maintains accurate, detailed case notes that are audit-ready and fully supported by documentation. Ensures SARs are filed accurately, timely, and in compliance with regulatory deadlines and quality standards.
- Conducts Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) reviews for high-risk members and relationships, including analysis of transactional behavior, occupation, business activities, and source of funds.
- Reviews and validates Customer Due Diligence (CDD) and EDD completed by Tier I analysts for accuracy, completeness, and risk alignment. Identifies risk factors requiring enhanced monitoring or escalation.
- Identifies patterns, trends, typologies, and emerging financial crime risks based on investigative findings.
- Provides feedback and recommendations to enhance monitoring rules, investigative procedures, and risk mitigation efforts. Ensures investigative activities meet internal quality standards and regulatory expectations.
- Assists in preparation for regulatory examinations, internal audits, and external audits related to BSA/AML investigations. Responds to examiner and auditor requests, including documentation, case support, and investigative explanations.
- Performs all other duties as assigned by the VP, BSA/AML Compliance.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
High School/GED required; completion of college courses and/or associate's degree preferred.
Experience/Skills/Knowledge:
- 2-5 years of BSA/AML investigations experience required, preferably in financial institution.
- Demonstrated knowledge of laws and regulations impacting the BSA/AML function required. Must have strong knowledge of BSA, AML, USA PATRIOT Act, OFAC, and related regulatory requirements.
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, problem solving, and investigative skills required. Must be able to conduct in-depth transactional and relationship-level investigations. Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and documentation standards.
- Must possess strong service orientation skills in alignment with the credit union's mission and core values.
- Proficiency with BSA/AML monitoring systems and investigative tools Must have the ability to identify suspicious activity, trends, and financial crime typologies.
- Must be able to handle multiple projects/priorities simultaneously with an effective outcome. Must be able to deal with highly confidential information. Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and documentation standards.
- Excellent verbal, written, telephone and interpersonal communication skills required. Strong written communication skills are particularly needed in drafting clear and effective SAR narratives. Experience conducting complex investigations and drafting SARs required.
- Must be PC proficient, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and the Internet.
- Must have the ability to function in a commercial office environment and utilize standard office equipment including but not limited to: fax, copier, telephone, etc. Ability to lift a minimum of 25lbs. e.g. file boxes
