BLK RVA & OutRVA Community Engagement Internship

Overview

The Richmond Region Tourism Foundation is seeking a dynamic and reliable intern to support its BLK RVA and OutRVA community-focused initiatives. This combined internship provides a unique opportunity to engage deeply with Richmond’s diverse cultural landscape, support historically underrepresented communities, and develop marketing, outreach, and organizational skills through hands-on experience.

The internship will run from May through August and is designed as a part-time opportunity, with an expected schedule of 25 to 29 hours per week. Compensation is $15 per hour. The role follows a hybrid work model, combining in-office work, remote responsibilities, and in-person visits throughout the Richmond region, including seven jurisdictions.

Key Responsibilities

The intern will assist in advancing the missions of both the BLK RVA and OutRVA programs. Duties will include but are not limited to:

Organizational Engagement

  • Learn the mission and initiatives of the Richmond Region Tourism Foundation, including both BLK RVA and OutRVA programs
  • Attend a Richmond Region Tourism “I Am Tourism” Ambassador (IAT) class: IAT RVA
  • Participate in:
    • All BLK RVA Advisory Committee and Subcommittee Meetings (when necessary)
    • All OutRVA Advisory Committee and Subcommittee Meetings (when necessary)
    • Internal content planning meetings with vendors and RRT marketing team

       

Community Engagement & Business Outreach

  • Set up and conduct weekly calls or in-person visits with both Black-owned and LGBTQIA+-owned businesses across the Richmond Region’s seven jurisdictions:
    • City of Richmond
    • City of Colonial Heights
    • Town of Ashland
    • Counties of Chesterfield, Hanover, Henrico, and New Kent
  • Distribute BLK RVA and OutRVA-branded promotional materials (stickers, posters, etc.) via mail and in-person
  • Represent both brands at virtual and in-person community meetings and events
  • Promote both initiatives through word-of-mouth, grassroots outreach, and digital marketing techniques

 

Marketing & Communications

  • Collaborate with BLK RVA and OutRVA businesses and their respective external marketing firms
  • Assist with updates to both campaign websites and regional event calendars
  • Upload events to Richmond Region Tourism, BLK RVA, and OutRVA calendars
  • Attend and support campaign-sponsored events including:
    • Transporting promotional materials
    • Setting up branded booths/tents
  • Create engaging social media content, especially Instagram Reels (experience highly recommended)
  • Scout local events relevant to both campaigns for potential inclusion on calendars and promotional outreach

 

Administrative Support

  • Provide general administrative assistance to Community Relations and Diversity Program Manager related to both programs as needed

 

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation
    (DMV motor vehicle and background check will be performed)
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds unassisted
  • Must have access to a personal laptop computer (tablets are not acceptable); Office 365 account and RRT email address will be provided
  • Experience with creating IG REELS and content highly recommended
