Bioinformatics Programmer / Research Analyst
Contract | Onsite – Baltimore, MD (Suite 100) | 40 Hours/Week
Position Overview
Seeking an experienced Bioinformatics Programmer to provide broad-based programming, analytical, and computational support across a range of genomic and proteomic research projects. The candidate will collaborate with scientists on experimental design, perform data analysis, maintain databases and web tools, and contribute to the publication of scientific reports. This role requires strong bioinformatics expertise combined with solid communication and documentation skills.
Key Responsibilities
Provide broad-based programming and analytic support for bioinformatic and research projects. Install, troubleshoot, and run open-source and commercial scientific software across platforms. Perform computational analysis of research data and interpret results. Perform sequencing and alignment of raw data and interpret findings using public access datasets. Collaborate with scientists to design, analyze, manage, and interpret all types of research data. Design and execute computational experiments. Advise bench scientists on experimental design, troubleshooting, and selection of appropriate computational tools. Develop specifications for new analyses; design, test, and implement solutions. Devise novel statistical methods and adapt existing bioinformatics techniques to identify trends and patterns. Perform data processing using computational and statistical methods. Assist in evaluating and interpreting results for validity and scientific meaning. Maintain detailed documentation of analyses and report results at weekly lab meetings. Prepare scientific and progress reports; assemble data into tables, graphs, and slides. Organize laboratory notebooks and computer databases to record experimental results. Provide large-scale genome-wide DNA and protein sequence analysis. Assist with development and maintenance of Oracle database for genomics and proteomics projects. Assist with development and maintenance of web tools and websites. Set up and maintain computer resources and laboratory networks. Respond to researcher inquiries regarding web resources and provide computational support to lab members. Contribute to publication of scientific reports.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Master's degree required — Science-related field (Biology preferred)
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Proficiency in MS Office Suite
Experience with bioinformatics tools and open-source/commercial scientific software
Experience with computational and statistical analysis of research data
Experience with Oracle database development and maintenance
Experience with sequencing, alignment, and genomic/proteomic data analysis
