Job Title: MRF Operations Manager

Terms: Fulltime Exempt (salary), with benefits

Compensation: $56,160 – $78,000

Benefits: 100% paid health insurance for the employee, life insurance, and long-term

disability. (Other insurance lines available at a shared or employee cost.)

PTO and paid holidays.

Hours: In order to provide management coverage during employees’ shift times, we anticipate this position generally working 8 am- 4 pm with occasional evenings and weekends

PRIMARY PURPOSE

The MRF Manager in coordination with the other MRF managers oversees the processing residential and commercial recyclables delivered to the material recovery facility (MRF), which includes safe and orderly receiving, processing and shipment of materials through the facility, supervising the flow of materials throughout the system, including on the tip floor and on the line, and collecting and recording data. The Manager supervises all staff and functions in the building when on site, in conjunction with the other MRF Managers. The Equipment Operator Supervisor and the Line Supervisor will report directly to this manager.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Managing people

· Provide direction, coaching, and leadership to MRF staff (approximately 40 employees) and direct supervision of a sub-set of 2 employees.

· Offer conflict resolution and problem solving in support of employees.

· Ensure complex schedules and rotation structures are completed so that operations run smoothly such as when there is shifting staff availability, when planning for adding shifts due to a high level of material levels, and directing work plans when equipment is not operating due to maintenance issues.

· Communicate daily with the other MRF Manager and with departmental supervisors to address day to day issues.

· Provide input into hiring, termination, compensation, and promotion decisions.

· Identify and provide the necessary training and orientation of new employees and retraining of existing employees as needed based on workflow, quality initiatives or needs, or other issues.

· Oversee completion of required employee paperwork, such as acknowledgements of policy and training, FMLA and ADA compliance, workers comp or medical documentation, etc.

· Create a positive team-oriented environment through employee development and engagement.

· Responsible for tracking and completing weekly payroll for specific staff.

· Evaluate employee performance using performance management systems and tools.

· Recommend disciplinary action as needed and coordinate with the Director of MRF Operations and HR to communicate about the disciplinary action with employees.

Managing operations/production

· Provide operational oversight to ensure smooth day-to-day operations of facility.

· Support data gathering from facility that is used to identify areas of improvement and measure progress around safety, quality, efficiency, and staff performance.

· Assure adequate equipment and staff is available to cover proper material flow.

· Manage production and logistics of sort line staff in accordance with policies and procedures.

· Make recommendations to the Director of MRF Operations regarding the hiring of employees to optimize material handling requirements, conceiving, and refining operational systems and improving efficiencies.

· Communicate with the Director of MRF Operations and maintenance managers about needed equipment repairs and concerns. Coordinate with Technicians to ensure the repairs are completed in a timely manner.

· Maintain accurate records, reports, and data collection including inventory logs, downtime logs, production logs, and other repositories of data.

· Identify additional areas where data collection will help improve MRF Performance

Supporting organizational safety goals

· Support weekly toolbox talks on relevant safety topics.

· Maintain a plant that meets federal, state, local, and corporate safety policies, procedures, and programs.

· Assess occupational and environmental safety hazards and effectiveness of controls and hazard reduction potential for all areas of the MRF.

· Responsible for all lock-out, tag-out procedures, compliance and performance

· Other tasks as assigned


JOB REQUIREMENTS:

· Must be bilingual, with speaking and writing fluency in English and Spanish. Must be able to convey information and ideas clearly.

· Must be interested in working in a challenging physical environment which includes extreme cold and extreme heat, loud equipment, occasional strong smells, rodents, and dusty/dirty working conditions—This is a recycling facility, so these conditions are a given.

· Must be willing to lead—monitoring performance, coaching supervisors and employees, issuing disciplinary warnings, directing and delegating work, seeing opportunities for improvement and advocating for change with upper management

· Must have the ability to solve problems, to assimilate information from various sources, and to analyze how internal processes could be improved


SKILLS AND ABILITIES

· Excellent interpersonal skills, proven ability to maintain good working relationships with coworkers/reports

· Experienced computer skills – fluent in Outlook, Excel, and Word

· Above average organizational skills and the ability to prioritize departmental functions in order to meet due dates and deadlines.

· Ability to work effectively and efficiently both independently and in a team environment.

· Ability to maintain confidentiality

· Working knowledge of effective manufacturing environment safety and training programs


PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

· Intermediate level computer skills.

· Safety/OSHA Regulations

· 3 years experience in managing or supervising a diverse, fast-paced team

· Data aptitude – ability to use excel to analyze trends, and experience with power BI


WORKING CONDITIONS

· Works indoors and outdoors; subject to seasonal and adverse weather conditions.

· Subject to noise from equipment operation.

· May climb in and out of equipment; bending at the waist; reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally; carrying; pushing and pulling.

· Must have dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of buttons and levers and use of feet to control pedals on equipment.

· Work will require occasional weekend and/or evening work.

· Ability to lift 50 pounds
