JOB SUMMARY
Supervise Automotive Technicians for the Fleet Services Department (FSD) and oversee the vehicle maintenance and repair program conducted in three County garages.
  • Directs the service, repair and preventative maintenance of county vehicles; develops, implements and supervises preventative maintenance programs; periodically reviews repair work and procedures to ensure accuracy, completeness and efficiency; recommends vehicles for replacement, prepares specifications and arranges for auction or disposal as necessary.
  • Supervises the work of Automotive Technicians and other assigned staff. Plans, prioritizes, and assigns tasks and projects; evaluates performance, and meets regularly with staff to discuss and resolve priorities, special assignments, problems, and technical issues.
  • Assures work quality and timely accomplishment of assigned duties in order to minimize downtime and returns; instructs staff in maintenance and repair techniques, monitors shop facilities, and enforce compliance to county policies and procedures.
  • Utilizes the fleet management system to maintain accurate records and indicators to prepare reports to management and departments.
  • Participates in various workshops and educational programs and maintain current knowledge on relevant industry directions and technologies. Recommends changes as appropriate.
  • Plans and prepares annual budget and monitors spending to remain within budget.
  • Reviews status of vehicles, tracks vehicle problems requiring additional maintenance and repair and notifies Department Director of major repair and maintenance problems.
  • Creates, tracks and closes work orders, maintains records of services performed and general vehicle information.
  • Collaborates with internal departments to recommend makes/models for various vehicle classes based upon analysis of vehicle trends, reliability data, resale values etc.
  • Works with procurement and supplier partners to ensure vehicles are procured and maintained at the lowest total cost, received on time, and in compliance with fiscal year budget requirements
  • Supervises shop facility maintenance and assures work areas are cleaned and maintained.
  • Monitors work site to assure that safety rules and regulations are followed and report safety hazards, equipment problems, repair needs, security issues, and emergency situations.
  • To promote and adhere to the workplace values of accountability, commitment, and teamwork to help enrich lives beyond expectation.
  • Perform work of Automotive Technician on occasion to manage workload
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, customer records, and restricted County information.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Four (4) years of work experience in vehicle maintenance and repairs of which one (1) two (2) years are supervisory or lead experience.
  • Arizona residentsmust have a valid Arizona Driver’s License upon hire;newly established Arizona Residents must have onewithin 30 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate's Degree in Automotive Technology.
  • OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certification.
  • Technical certifications from National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) may be required.

  • Knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment used in the repair of vehicles, equipment, and components.
  • Knowledge of interpersonal skills including conflict resolution
  • Knowledge of gasoline & diesel engines, power trains, and hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, and electrical systems
  • Knowledge and use of fleet management systems and basic computer tools: Word, Excel, Power Point
  • Knowledge of Federal, state, and FSD safety rules and regulations, occupational hazards, and safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of proper use and storage of hazardous chemicals used in the workplace.
  • Knowledge of environmentally responsible and resource-efficient maintenance techniques.
  • Skill in written and verbal communication skills, competent in presentation creation and delivery.
  • Skill in inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing mechanical problems in a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
  • Skill in identifying maintenance needs and mechanical problems and taking corrective actions.
  • Skill in performing computerized diagnostic tests and fine calibrations on vehicle components and equipment.
  • Ability to organize with good quantitative ability.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and specifications.
  • Ability to follow and maintain safety standards and identify safety problems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work is light and requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects. The work also requires the ability to finger, handle, reach, perform repetitive motion, lift, speak, hear, walk, and demonstrate visual and mental acuity.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed in a relatively safe, secure, and stable work environment.

The hiring salary for this position is dependent upon experience, qualifications and position funding; starting salaries above the midpoint require additional approval.
