AUDIO-VISUAL PRODUCTION COORDINATOR

We’re looking for an audio-visual (A/V) engineer with extensive technical expertise to lead and manage Cary’s multimedia operations. Your engineering skills will be central to delivering reliable, professional-quality productions that amplify Cary’s values, broadcast key messages, and promote major events and initiatives at a local, regional, and national level, all while maintaining our brand standards.

From Cary's Council chambers to the control room, you'll thrive behind the scenes, managing the systems that keep Cary's televised and streamed communications running. You'll play a crucial role in fulfilling Cary's commitment to transparency and citizen engagement by managing and operating equipment during Council and other public meetings, scheduling programming for our government access channel, and troubleshooting technical challenges as they arise. With expertise in audio engineering, you’ll help ensure clear, balanced sound, and with your technical problem-solving skills, you’ll troubleshoot system challenges in real time. You’ll also serve as the lead project manager for our ten-year capital improvement plan, guiding critical upgrades, maintenance, and integrations within the control room.

Beyond daily operations, you’ll set and uphold standards for A/V procedures, train staff on equipment use, and serve as the main liaison with vendors to ensure timelines, budgets, and deliverables are met. As a member of the Marketing team, you'll collaborate with colleagues and vendors to shoot, edit, and deliver technically polished photo, video, and audio productions; manage our media archives and digital video distribution channels; and maintain a strong, consistent presence on platforms like YouTube — ensuring our community has on-demand access to government proceedings and community information.

Work is performed on the Marketing team under the general supervision of the Creative Supervisor.Strong technical aptitude, A/V engineering proficiency, and comprehensive production experience are essential, as this role spans administration, diverse production environments, A/V equipment, and technology management.Scheduled and occasional on-call availability on weekends and nights will be required.

Administration & Management:

• Document standard operating procedures and train staff on them.
• Manage video projects, contracts, budgets, and vendors.
• Prepare, recommend, and monitor annual budget for multimedia services including portable equipment and Cary’s government access channel.
• Manage Cary’s Council chambers and control room.

Cable & Livestreaming:

• Assist with live streams, cablecasts, and recordings of meetings and events in coordination with outside A/V vendors and Cary staff, inside and outside of Council Chambers.
• Manage technical systems and scheduling for Town government access channel and online streaming platforms (Cablecast, BoxCast, YouTube, and Facebook).
• Curate appropriate programming from internal and external entities.

Equipment, Technology, & Assets:

• Maintain, replace, and manage audio, video, and photography equipment inventory; proactively identify technical or production needs.
• Administer Cary's digital asset management platform, (Canto) maintain the town's photo and video libraries, and provide support and training to Cary staff as needed.
• Fulfill media, vendor, and citizen requests for copies of videos/images.

Video, Photo, & Audio Production:

• Work with staff and photo and video vendors to gather diverse photo and video assets of Town events, programs, places, assets, and services; maintaining a current and robust photo and video library.
• Provide expertise on audio-visual elements for compelling storytelling.
• Contribute to multimedia project planning, draft production briefs, and define project expectations.
• Operate camera and audio equipment, set up lighting, and direct staff onsite at productions.
• Acquire, maintain, and incorporate into productions a vetted selection of fair use and/or licensed music and audio assets.

Strategy & Planning:

• Stay updated on industry best practices and trends.
• Recommend and integrate, as directed, emerging media and technology into communication projects and Town productions.
• Partner with creative and strategy leads to brainstorm and develop creative direction for video needs.
• Assist in the development of long-term plans for multimedia content through audience and market research.

Perform other job-related tasks as required.

• Expert technical knowledge of camera, audio, and lighting equipment and integrated A/V systems.
• Experience in all stages of video production, including pre-production and principal photography, and post-production.
• Ability to ensure consistency in tone, style, and quality of audio, video, and photography.
• Ability to efficiently manage multiple projects, follow instructions, and work independently.
• Ability to understand and articulate creative and stylistic choices.
• Ability and motivation to learn new technology, software, and skills.
• Strong skills in public speaking and verbal communication.
• Experience with capital planning: forecasting, budgeting, and managing assets, ensuring alignment with long-term goals.
• Strong written communication skills, including the ability to write scripts and creative briefs that align with the Cary brand.
• Ability to collaborate with internal and external partners within the context of broader communications and marketing planning.
• Ability to capture quality video footage and audio at town events and for various departmental projects both on location and in a studio setting.
• An understanding of audio mixing and mastering.
• Basic understanding of marketing strategy and tactics.
• Ability to maintain composure and professionalism in high-pressure environments.
• Ability to operate a full-frame camera.

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in video production, broadcast and electronic communication arts, multimedia arts and design, journalism, or marketing and five or more years of experience in a video production environment, including:

• Non-linear editing software and digital audio workstations;
• Live video production, including streaming and/or broadcast television.

Candidates must also be able to work flexible hours to accommodate evening and weekend meetings/events and occasional after-hours troubleshooting on site.

Preference will be given to candidates with:

• Considerable experience in the capturing and gathering of video footage on-site at events, programs, and locations to support storytelling and content development;
• Considerable experience in editing and producing high-quality audio, video, and photo assets, including color correction, sound mixing, and formatting for use across digital, social, and broadcast platforms;
• Considerable experience in Adobe Creative Suite, including Premiere Pro, Photoshop, After Effects, and Audition;
• Some experience managing positive media interactions in a professional setting;
• Some knowledge of North Carolina public records laws;
• Some experience measuring marketing ROI and applying it to strategy and decision-making;
• Some experience in graphic design, particularly in creating custom computer or motion graphics for videos.
