Compensation and Benefits:


Estimated Hiring Salary Range: $85,853 - $112,964 Full Salary Range: $85,853 - $153,631

Annual Salary will be commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications.

Work Schedule:Monday through Friday; 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Evening meetings or court appearances may be required as needed.


The City is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Associate City Attorney to provide legal guidance and representation to City leadership, departments, and staff. This position plays an essential role in supporting municipal operations by ensuring compliance with applicable laws, minimizing legal risk, and contributing to the development of policies that support effective governance and public service.

About the Role:

The primary responsibility of this position is to provide legal advice to City staff, officers, and departments across the organization, as well as to handle civil litigation matters in both federal and state courts. The Associate City Attorney will support a wide variety of municipal functions and provide legal insight on policies, contracts, and regulatory matters. Ability to communicate clearly and professionally, both orally and in writing; ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines, and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal advice and counsel to City officials, departments, and staff
  • Represent the City in civil litigation matters in federal and state courts
  • Conduct legal research and interpret applicable laws, statutes, and regulations
  • Draft legal opinions, pleadings, briefs, contracts, loan documents, ordinances, and resolutions
  • Review legal documents and contracts to ensure compliance with applicable laws
  • Provide guidance related to municipal governance, policies, and procedures
  • Collaborate with City leadership and external partners to address legal matters
  • Maintain professional working relationships with City staff, attorneys, public officials, and the general public
  • Manage assignments effectively to meet deadlines and organizational needs

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school with 1 to 3 years of relevant legal experience
  • License to practice law in the State of North Carolina
  • Valid Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in municipal law, public sector law, or civil litigation
  • Experience/familiarity with local government operations
  • Experience drafting contracts, ordinances, and policy documents
  • Experience providing legal guidance to public entities
  • Experience with state and federal constitutional and statutory provisions relating to municipalities
  • Experience with judicial procedures and rules of evidence
  • Experience with civil law procedures
  • Experience with legal research methods
  • Experience with drafting legal opinions, pleadings, contracts, and legal documents
