UVA Health is seeking a dynamic and strategic Associate Chief Nursing Officer to provide executive-level leadership for patient care services within the Medical Center. This role is responsible for advancing high-quality, patient-centered care across assigned clinical areas while driving continuous improvement in outcomes, safety, and patient experience.

As a designated leader supporting the Chief Nursing Officer, the Associate Chief Nursing Officer oversees resource and financial management and guides the development of policies, programs, and evidence-based practices that support clinical excellence and regulatory compliance. The Associate Chief serves as a visionary and change agent, fostering a collaborative, healthy work environment and strengthening shared governance across nursing.

The Associate Chief Nursing Officer partners closely with physician leaders, directors, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure alignment with the strategic priorities of the Medical Center and School of Medicine. The ideal candidate brings a strategic mindset, strong operational leadership, and the ability to build effective partnerships across clinical and academic settings to support UVA Health’s mission of excellence in patient care, education, and research.

  • Leads and directs patient care delivery system

  • Accountable for continuous quality improvement for inpatient care

  • Acquires resources for functional areas

  • Ensures development of policies, programs, and evidence-based practice consistent with standards

  • Provides leadership for human resources development and management

  • Facilitates shared decision making with stakeholders

  • Partners with other disciplines and leaders

  • Acts as visionary, strategic planner, change agent

  • Provide strategic analysis, direction, and leadership in collaboration with other care partners.

  • Ensure that strategic decisions for the units are in alignment with strategic plans in the Medical Center and School of Medicine.

  • Implement action to sustain or improve patient satisfaction.

  • Actively promote a healthy work environment.

  • Demonstrate strong partnership with physician leaders.

  • Support the functioning of multidisciplinary clinical groups who provide patient-centered care and clinical research. This includes collaborating with partners in the School of Medicine and in other units of the Medical Center.

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies including but not limited to: Joint Commision and Center for Medicaid Services, including oversight of required documentation.

  • Work with Facilities and Maintenance staff to address needs of clinical areas for renovation, repair, and new construction.

  • Ensure effective financial management with accountability for adherence to the annual budget.

  • Manage capital acquisitions of new technology.

  • Enforce compliance with Medical Center policies.

  • Participate in the Quality and Performance Improvement Program and implement actions to improve outcomes of care.

  • Support and promote the shared governance model for Nursing; promote and maintain the principles of a Magnet organization.

  • Participate in leadership activities to support the strategic plan of the Medical Center.

  • Foster effective relationships with the division medical director within the School of Medicine, with the foremost representatives of the Clinical Staff, and with Medical Center leadership to establish a quality agenda that reaches throughout all levels of the organization.

  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Registered Nurse with Master's or Doctoral degree in Nursing, or Bachelor's of Science in Nursing with Master's or Doctoral degree in Business or Health-related field.

Experience: 5 years of experience in management with progressive leadership abilities. Administrative experience in an academic setting strongly preferred. Cardiovascular Clinical Experience Strongly preferred

Licensure: Registered Nurse.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

The starting base rate for this role is $250,000.00 annually. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
