Job Title: Assistant Swim Team Coach

Status: Part time, non-exempt

Y Job Grade 4

Wage: $16.00/hr or DOE

Hours: 5-29/week

Reports to: Head MYST Coach/ Director of Aquatics

Probation: Subject to a 12-month introductory (probationary) period


POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for assisting in all levels of swim team development. In addition to coaching, coaches also must implement the mission and values of the Missoula YMCA in the program, implement USS regulations and maintain certifications, communicate with other coaches and swim families, participate in staff training and development and fund raising, perform facilities maintenance as directed, and foster program growth and MYST public relations. Coaches must be able to thrive in an environment with the unique challenges of a non-profit, community service organization and have the flexibility to work in a constantly changing environment. Works with general supervision.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Ensure the safetly and well being of all particiapnts
  • Plan and oversee assigned practice sessions and clinics
  • Be physically able to demonstrate and perform swimming skills and proper stroke techniques to swim participants both in and out of water
  • Know and use positive guidance methods and techniques in coaching participants
  • Participate in implementation and facilitation of dry land training
  • Assist in the design and oversight of seasonal training plans for your assigned group
  • Assist in the implementation and direction of a parent education program
  • Update and maintain all swimmer records including taking attendance of participants and report to Head Coach or Director of Aquatics each practice
  • Facilitate and assist with fundraising events
  • Be present and assist in supervision of all swim meets, training camps and swim related events
  • Follow all policies as they pertain to coach and participant conduct and vehicular travel
  • Maintain open and clear communication between the YMCA and parent committees
  • Adhere to the mission of the YMCA and at all times exhibit, teach and promote the Y Character traits of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
  • Complete required child abuse training, comply with legal and ethical obligation as a mandatory reporter of suspected child abuse and cooperate fully with any investigation of such abuse


Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education/experience: Prefered one-two years related coaching experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Language skills: ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, maintenance instructions and procedure manuals, ability to write routine reports and correspondence, ability to speak effectively before groups of swimmers, staff and/or parents.
  • Math skills including basic statistics and graphs; and reasoning skills sufficient to carry out instructions delivered in any form, problem solving; basic business computer skills such as word processing, spreadsheets and communications.
  • Certificates and licenses: certification as governed by USA Swimming, current CPR, First Aid and Coaches Safety Card, Red Cross Lifeguarding Certificate and ASCA (American Swim Coaches Association) certification levels 1-5 preferred.


WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to tolerate hot, wet and humid conditions and occasional chemical fumes, airborne particles and the risk of electric shock in a pool environment.
  • Must be able to tolerate varying amounts of noise
  • Specific vision abilities required are good close, distance and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
  • Must be able to work autonomously within the Y core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility. Must be able to work with limited supervision.
  • Must be able to meet minimum requirements and perform functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly to all children, participants, parents, members and company personnel.
  • Ability to attend all trainings and meetings as required even if scheduled outside normal working or regular scheduled hours.
  • Present a clean, well-groomed appearance.
  • Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, stoop, kneel, climb, crouch or crawl for varying or long periods of time.
  • Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
  • Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 75 pounds in weight and adults of various sizes in need of care in an emergency situation.
  • Occasionally must be able to lift and carry supplies and equipment weighing up to 75 pounds.
