About the Office

The Ulster County Public Defender’s Office ensures that the constitutional right to counsel is a reality for eligible individuals, regardless of income. We represent clients in criminal, Family Court, and appellate matters when liberty, family integrity, and due process are at stake.

Our office is built around a multidisciplinary model, with attorneys, investigators, case managers, and support staff working collaboratively to address both the legal and practical challenges our clients face.

The Role

We have openings for a full-time and a part-time position based in Kingston, New York.

Assistant Public Defenders in our office handle serious criminal matters, including felony cases, and are expected to take ownership of their work from arraignment through disposition and, where appropriate, trial.

  • Representing clients in criminal proceedings, including hearings and trials
  • Conducting legal research and motion practice
  • Advising clients on legal rights, strategy, and collateral consequences
  • Negotiating dispositions where appropriate
  • Working closely with investigators and interdisciplinary team members

Attorneys are given meaningful courtroom responsibility and are expected to exercise independent judgment in managing their cases.
