General Description(Purpose and Function):

The Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Miami, Leonard Miller School ofMedicineis seeking a fellowship-trained surgeon to join oursurgicalteam.We have a strong multidisciplinary group that works to provide high quality clinical care and access tocutting edgeclinical trials.The Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only NCI-designated cancer center in South Florida and is focused on innovation in cancer care.The candidate will work closely with theChief of Surgical Oncology to continue tosupportthe gastrointestinalcancerservice line.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities(For-exempt EmployeesInclude Percent of Effort):

Job responsibilities include participation in clinical and educational activities as they relate to the Division of Surgical Oncology and the Department of Surgery with a special emphasis ongastrointestinalcancer as following:

  • Oversees outcomes, quality, and patient experience for the program

  • Works closely and collaborates with theChiefand all members of theteam including medical oncologists.

  • Coordinatesand provide scheduling services for physicians to ensurecoverageto perform services when scheduled

  • Maintainadministrative recordspertaining tothe scheduling of all physicians and ensurethe hospital (s) has/havereasonable access tosuchrecords

  • Perform dailyunitrounds onall assigned inpatients and perform all inpatient follow up during the inpatient stay

  • Provide outpatient professional medical services performed in all scheduled clinics related to theProgram.

  • Participate in regularoutpatientclinicsfor theProgram

  • Coordinate inpatient care and cliniccare undertheProgram withthepatient’s primary physician

  • Collaborate with other physicians andhospitalpersonnel (including case managers) to reduce medically unnecessary use of resources and length of stay and coordinate interdepartmental patient care.

  • Provide assistanceas needed to bed control and otherhospitalpersonnel tofacilitatepatient throughput

  • Respond ina timelyfashion to patients, other physicians orhospitalpersonnel makingpatientcare-relatedinquiries

  • Work collaboratively to implement clinical effectiveness programs, including clinical pathways and other similar guidelines and protocolsas needed

  • Participate in all root causeanalysis andrelated activities conducted for the Programat all sites of service

  • Work collaboratively withhospitalpersonnel toimplement the quality goals of the Programandimplement qualityinitiatives to address any identified deficiencies

  • Participatein periodicmeetings with unit personnel atthe hospitalrelated to core measures andpatient andphysician satisfaction

  • Implement teaching activities relatedto residentsandfellows rotatingthrough the Program

  • Work withhospitalpersonnel to obtain all mutually agreed uponprogram designations of distinction

  • Provides professional medical servicestwenty fourhours a day and seven days a week for 365 days (or 366 as the case may be) a year to all inpatients/outpatientsin the Programin collaboration with other Facultyin thesection and the division.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Along with proper training and certification,the incumbentmust have a keen interest in and concern for the needs ofcancer patients, and other related surgical oncologyanamolies.

  • Knowledge of and ability to apply professionalmedical principles, procedures, and techniques

  • Thorough knowledge of pharmacological agents used in patient treatments

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills along with proper telephone etiquette

  • Performsdutiesin tactful and professional manner

  • Fluency in Spanishisgreatly valuedbecause our local and regional demographics.

Education Requirements(Essential Requirements):

Applicants should have a strong commitment to patient care and education and an interest in clinical research.Bachelor's degree in pre-medicine or related field, followed by 4 years in medical school andadditionalresidencyand fellowship specialtytraining.

  • Eligible candidates must be board certified in surgery, be able to obtain andmaintaina valid DEA Registration and Florida Medical License, andanACGME approved surgical oncology fellowship.

Work Experience Requirements (Essential Requirements):

  • 35yearspost fellowship clinical experiencein the field ofgastrointestinal surgical oncology preferred

The candidate will work closely with the Chief of Surgical Oncology to continue to support the oncology service line.

The positionis for anAssistant/Associate Professor ofSurgery.Job responsibilities include participation in clinical, research and educational activities as they relate to the Division of Surgical Oncology and the Department of Surgery with a special emphasis onleading and growingour nationally recognized HIPEC program.The candidate willbe responsible fordeliveringcare ofSurgical Oncologypatientsat the University of Miami Hospital, Sylvester Comprehensive CancerCenterand Jackson Memorial Hospital.In collaboration with the Division Chief,the applicant will be part ofimplementing the Division's strategic planwhich sets forth clinical, financial, educational and research divisionalobjectivesto support and complement the mission statement of the Department, theUniversity of Miami Miller School ofMedicineand the affiliated Hospitals. He/she will be expected toparticipatein all divisional activities, perform patient care activities for surgical oncology patients, develop an independentpracticeand become involved in teaching medical students,residentsand fellows.

Additionally, the candidate will alsobe responsible forpursuing research protocolsand/or grants, secure independent fundingandbe an integral part of theacademicenterprisein theDivision of Surgical Oncologyand at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. The applicantwill be expected to work collaboratively with other departments tohelp togrow the surgical oncology research program.

Work Experience Requirements (Essential Requirements):

  • Eligible candidates must be board certified in surgery, be able to obtain andmaintaina valid DEA Registration and Florida Medical License, and an ACGME approved surgical oncology fellowship.

  • 3 – 5 years post fellowship clinical experience in the field of HIPEC preferred
