The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for an Assistant Director, Department of Fish and Game located in Alaska!

What you will be doing:
Under the general direction of the Division Operations Manager, this position serves as a principal assistant to the Director and Deputy Director to:
  • Serve as the division’s primary liaison to the Board of Game; works with the Director and Deputy Director to direct and coordinate Division activities related to Board of Game functions, assisting in developing Department proposals, reviewing and analyzing public proposals, preparing Division positions and recommendations, and developing biological presentations to the Board of Game.
  • Provides program oversight for several statewide programs including ANILCA-Access Defense, Waterfowl, and Small Game.
  • Assisting with formulation of division policies and procedures, issue resolution, budget preparation, strategic planning.

The working environment you can expect:

The position is being recruited statewide. Work location will be based on the selected candidate. The position will have immediate access to and be in close contact with the Division Operations Manager, the Director, and other members of the division management team. It will work in a collaborative environment with statewide, regional, and area staff located throughout the state. Travel is required and will be regular but infrequent.

  • Knowledge and experience of Alaska’s wildlife and habitats and the laws pertaining to them.
  • Experience with state and federal wildlife regulatory processes, including proposal analyses and experience working with board members, constituent groups, State Advisory Committees and Federal Councils, and others involved in regulatory issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to work collaboratively on complex issues with diverse groups of varying opinions while building and maintaining effective relationships.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including experience explaining controversial wildlife laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Proven ability to effectively manage programs and resources across Alaska, including the supervision, motivation, and mentorship of employees.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college.
AND
One year of professional management or administrative experience at the senior review or supervisory level equivalent to Fishery Biologist 4, Habitat Biologist 4, Wildlife Biologist 4, Subsistence Regional Program Manager, Accountant 4 and Administrative Manager 3 with the State of Alaska.

OR
Three years of professional management or administrative experience at the advanced level equivalent to Fishery Biologist 3, Habitat Biologist 3, Wildlife Biologist 3, Fish Culturist 3, Subsistence Resources Specialist 3, Accountant 3 and Administrative Manager 2 with the State of Alaska.

Substitution:
Professional resource management or administrative experience in excess of the minimum qualifications will substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required education (3 semester hours or 4 quarter hours equal one month of experience).
