The purpose of the Assistant Cook is to assist Cook in the preparation of meals at Pleasant View Nursing Home. The current position is full-time AM shift.
ESSENSTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES including the following:
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.- Assist Cook in all areas of work.
- In the absence of the Cook, assume their duties if appropriately trained and skilled.
- Supervise and prepare meals in large quantity.
- Prepare food, such as bread, rolls, pastries, etc.
- Supervise and assist in the entire daily clean up procedure.
- Assign daily tasks to Food Service Assistants.
- Supervise and assist in the preparation of foods at the proper time for special diets.
- Relieve or substitute for absent employees if needed.
- Fill food requisitions from Nursing and Activities.
- Prepare tray and menu labels as well as tickets utilizing computer equipment.
- Obtain products from storage if needed for completion of menu item.
- Assist with dishwashing procedure if needed.
- Perform any other tasks that may be assigned.
Resident Rights- Maintain the confidentiality of resident health care information.
- Uphold Resident Rights.
- Report allegations of resident abuse or neglect immediately to the Administrator. Safe guard the resident from harm.
- Uphold the privacy and confidentiality of resident information at all times.
Personnel Functions- Understands and follow the Green County and Pleasant View Employee Handbooks.
- Follow facility guidelines, read updates, memos, and attend educational sessions.
- Fulfill work schedule by arriving to the work station at the start of the shift. Meet attendance standards. Fill in for open shifts as needed.
- Work cooperatively and collaboratively with other departments; assisting one another as needed and when requested.
- Be a positive team member. Refrain from speaking negatively, engaging in gossip and the criticism of fellow employees.
- Be supportive of the nurse, the Care Coordinators (NCC), Nursing Supervisor, The ADON and the DON.
- Communicate in a positive manner. Communicate concerns, questions, frustrations and complaints to the supervisor in a timely and confidential manner. In the event that this communication is not resolved, communication of this will be presented to the Administrator.
- Understand that performance and conduct reflect positive customer service to internal and external customers.
- Attend all mandatory in-services or complete the make-up session in a timely manner.
- Attend and participates in unit meetings, department meetings and other meetings as assigned.
- Keep personal items, and cell phone in the employee locker or in the employee’s vehicle.
- Understand that cell phones are not to be used during paid work time.
- Use the facility computer for resident documentation only. Understand that the computer is facility property and is not to be used for personal use for any reason or method.
- Understand that job performance will be reviewed for a clear understanding of expectations, and that job performance that does not meet standards and guidelines may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE- High school diploma
- 1 year commercial or institutional food preparation experience, preferably in a long-term care setting, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- An excellent attendance record is required.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONSNone required for this position.
LANGUAGE SKILLS- Ability to classify, compute, and tabulate data and information, following a prescribed plan requiring the exercise of some judgment. Ability to compare, count, differentiate, measure, and sort information. Ability to assemble, copy, record, and transcribe data and information.
- Ability to explain, demonstrate, and clarify to others within well established guidelines and standards, as well as the ability to follow specific instructions and respond to simple requests.
- Ability to utilize descriptive data and information, such as recipes, diet manuals, menus, work schedules, cook books, cleaning charts, residents’ menu requests and general operating manuals.
- Ability to communicate effectively with Food Service Manager, nursing staff, Food Service Assistants, Environmental Service Staff, and maintenance personnel. Ability to supervise work of others as needed and required.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide and be able to calculate volume and ratios.
REASONING ABILITY- Ability to use functioning reasoning in the performance of semi-routine functions involving standardized work with some choice of action.
- Ability to apply situational reasoning ability by exercising judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of predefined duties subject to frequent change.
PHYSICAL DEMANDSThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring simple, periodic adjustments, such as food mixers, blenders, slicers, grinders, and steam kettles.
- Ability to move and guide material using simple tools.
- Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet, and limbs in performing slightly skilled movements such as cutting food.
- Ability to use food preparation utensils.
- Ability to stand for 2 or more hours or extended periods of time during a work day.
- Ability to exert moderate physical effort in sedentary to light work, involving climbing, balancing, kneeling, stooping and crouching.
- Ability to exert mildly heavy physical effort in moderate to heavy work including lifting/carrying (0-34 lbs. approximately 34-66%; 35-100+ lbs. approximately 1-33%).
- Ability to place and remove items at or above eye level.
- Ability to lift items above head level.

- In regard to environment factors work is under moderately safe and comfortable conditions with potential factors such as odors, smoke, potential violence, noise, disease, wet or slick floors, hot surfaces, sharp implements, and food spills.
- Pleasant View Nursing Home is a 24-hour facility which requires continuous care for residents, therefore employees must meet attendance standards by arriving to work on time, work all scheduled shifts and extra shifts that are agreed to work and have an overall excellent attendance record.
