Role Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and hands-on Assistant Controller for an urgent three-month interim assignment to cover an FMLA leave. This pivotal role oversees the accounting department for multiple Delaware-domiciled Property & Casualty (P&C) Pet insurance entities.
The successful candidate will lead a team of seven through the Q2 close and Statutory reporting cycle, ensuring total accuracy in financial reporting and regulatory compliance. We are looking for a leader who can hit the ground running by May 15th (or sooner) to maintain momentum during this critical period.
Position Details
- Duration: 3 Months (Immediate Start)
- Location: Hybrid (Tues/Thurs in-office) | Hybrid-3 days a week
- Reporting Line: Reports to the Director; dotted line to the Director of Financial Reporting and Director of FP&A.
Primary Responsibilities
- Team Leadership: Manage and provide strategic guidance to a team of seven junior and mid-level accountants, ensuring high-volume recurring workflows are completed with precision.
- Closing & Reporting: Direct the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes across multiple insurance entities. Oversee all Statutory reporting and ensure timely NAIC/DOI submissions.
- Technical Oversight: Ensure the integrity of the general ledger by overseeing bank reconciliations, accruals, intercompany charges, and journal entries.
- Audit & Tax: Lead the preparation of audited financial statements and serve as the primary point of support for external auditors. Oversee premium tax and regulatory fee filings.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with Actuarial teams on reserves, loss triangles, and financial analytics. Coordinate with FP&A and Financial Reporting to drive process improvements and automation.
- Compliance: Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and comprehensive workflow documentation.
Candidate Profile
Experience & Industry Knowledge
- Tenure: 6–10 years of progressive accounting experience.
- Management: Proven track record of managing teams of 7+ individuals.
- Niche Expertise: * Priority 1: Insurance industry veterans with deep knowledge of P&C Statutory requirements and MGA/carrier structures.
- Priority 2: Candidates from complex Financial Services or Manufacturing backgrounds.
Technical Proficiency
- General Ledger: Hands-on experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365.
- Statutory Software: Proficiency in Sapiens Statement Pro.
- Analysis: Advanced Excel skills and a general facility with the Microsoft Office Suite.
Soft Skills
- Accountability: A strong sense of ownership and the ability to operate independently in a high-pressure, deadline-driven environment.
- Organization: Exceptional organizational skills to manage high-volume transactional workflows.
