Assistant City Engineer

Highly responsible position for developing and supervising professional level work of considerable difficulty in coordinating all City engineering design projects, in overseeing Engineering Division staff, and in assuming the functions of the City Engineer in his absence. Responsibilities include administration duties associated with budget, employee administration, routine administrative programs and planning, and directing major programs and projects of the Engineering Division.
  • Supervises the planning and design of complex public works projects; estimates quantities and cost of such Projects
  • Analyzes conflicting design requirements and approves changes
  • Plans, organizes, directs and is responsible for the performance of the engineering, and surveying functions
  • Reviews and approves plans and specifications for proposed projects; prepares reports and recommendations to superiors
  • Plans, directs and coordinates the inspection of construction projects to ensure compliance with engineering plans, contracts, specifications and City Code
  • Plans, assigns, directs and evaluates the work performed by subordinate staff personnel
  • Maintains liaison with consulting engineers and appropriate County, State and Federal agencies regarding joint projects
  • Instructs, trains, and supervises personnel in all aspects of public works engineering
  • Recommends technical standards for inclusion in specifications of public works construction
  • Reviews and approves construction plans prepared by consulting engineers and architects
  • Develops and coordinates activities for capital budget projects
  • Develops and supervises the Engineering Division operating and capital improvements projects (CIP)
  • Directs the preparation and submission of grant applications and serves as grant administrator for programs funded by grants
  • Acts as City Engineer in the absence of the City Engineer
  • Graduation from a college or university accredited by the American Board of Engineering Technology(ABET) with a four (4) year degree in civil engineering or a relatedfield
  • Current Florida Professional Engineer (PE) registration as issued by the State ofFlorida
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may besubstituted
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of engineering, surveying, design, construction, maintenance, and operation of major Public Works projects and facilities such as: highway, bridges,water and sewer works flood control, drainage works, traffic, and coastal protectionfacilities
  • Considerable knowledge of laws and regulations applicable to design and construction of PublicWorks projects
  • Ability to instruct, train, and supervise personnel in all aspects of Public Works engineering
Preferred: Do you have (4) four years' experience in Engineering?

Physical Requirements
  • Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personalcontact
  • Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office-related equipment, such as, but not limited to, word processor, calculator, copier, and fax machine
  • May involve significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, some crawling, reaching, and handling, sitting, standing, pushing, andpulling
  • Must be able to drive an automobile and perform on-site inspections at locations that may not be accessible to the physically handicapped
