Work Schedule:Monday through Friday; 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. May require flexibility to meet the needs of the City, including attendance at meetings, court proceedings, and emergency response situations.
The City Attorney’s Office is seeking an experienced Assistant City Attorney – Litigation to perform highly responsible professional legal work supporting departments across the organization. This position plays a critical role in protecting the City’s legal interests through expert representation in State and Federal Civil Court, providing legal counsel, and preparing complex legal documents related to municipal law and civil litigation matters.

About the RoleThe Assistant City Attorney – Litigation performs advanced professional legal work involving research, analysis, and preparation of complex legal documents and pleadings. The position manages multiple high-level projects, assignments, and cases simultaneously, often involving complex and sensitive legal issues.
This role represents the City in State and Federal Civil Court and provides legal guidance to departments across the organization, particularly in matters involving municipal law, civil litigation, and police-related legal issues. The position works independently with limited supervision and provides leadership, training, and oversight to paralegals and other legal staff.
Key Responsibilities:- Represent the City in State and Federal Civil Court proceedings
- Conduct legal research and analysis on complex municipal law matters
- Prepare and review legal opinions, pleadings, briefs, contracts, ordinances, and resolutions
- Manage multiple litigation cases and legal projects simultaneously
- Provide legal advice and counsel to City departments, leadership, and staff
- Interpret federal and state laws, regulations, and constitutional provisions affecting municipalities
- Ensure compliance with judicial procedures and rules of evidence
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders, outside counsel, and public officials
- Provide leadership, training, and guidance to paralegals and support staff
- Draft and review loan documents, agreements, and legal contracts
- Maintain accurate documentation and meet deadlines for court filings and legal processes
- Strong legal research and analytical skills
- Ability to manage multiple complex assignments simultaneously
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with attorneys, City staff, public officials, and the public

- 4–6 years ofprogressively responsible legal experience, including civil litigation
- License to practice law in the State of North Carolina
- Valid Driver’s License
Preferred Qualifications- Experience in municipal law and civil litigation
- Experience with state and federal constitutional and statutory provisions relating to municipalities
- Experience with judicial procedures, rules of evidence, and civil law procedures
- Experience drafting legal opinions, pleadings, briefs, contracts, ordinances, and resolutions
- Experience mentoring or supervising legal support staff
- Admitted to practice in Federal Court
