Title: Assistant/Associate Professor (H3/M11 - H4/M11)

Position No: 88900T and 88918T (2 positions)

Hiring Unit: UHM School of Medicine – Dept of Medicine

Location: Queen’s Medical Center- UH Tower

Salary information: Commensurate with qualifications and experience

Monthly Type: 11-month

Tenure Track: Non-Tenure

Full-time/Part-time: Part-time, up to 10% Full Time Equivalency (FTE)

Temporary/Permanent: Temporary

Other conditions:

Private funds, to begin May 2026, pending position clearance and availability of funds, annually renewable subject to satisfactory performance and funding availability. Position may be eligible for increase in FTE upon availability of funds.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides mentorship, and instruction to medical students, interns, and residents in a clinical learning environment.
  • Supports the Ambulatory Director of Medical Education, QEC and Queen Emma Clinic leadership in the development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum, as well as faculty and organizational development initiatives, ensuring alignment with education principles, accreditation requirements, and University objectives.
  • Collaborates with the Department of Medicine and Queen Emma Clinic leadership to integrate clinical operations with teaching and educational missions.
  • Participates in administrative activities that support clinical operations, faculty development, and medical education programs.
  • Performs other scholarly duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Assistant Professor:

  • MD degree or equivalent medical degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and/or American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine.
  • Current Hawaii medical license by date of hire.
  • Familiarity with Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) requirements and Continuing Medical Education (CME).
  • Demonstrated ability in teaching and patient care.
  • Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
  • Excellent communication skills, written and spoken.
  • Excellent organizational skills.

Associate Professor:

  • Same as Assistant Plus
  • Four years in the rank of Assistant Professor, or four years of other health care experience, or a total of four years of teaching in the rank of Assistant Professor and other experience, or one year at the rank of Associate Professor at another health care school of recognized standing.
  • Proven ability in teaching, research, and program administration.
  • Recognition for having made a significant scholarly contribution to the clinical specialty.
  • Evidence of excellent patient care in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to serve as a role model for students and junior colleagues.
  • Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
  • Evidence of excellent team building and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience functioning in a complex system of multiple organizations and stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with LCME and ACGME requirements.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience with curriculum development and evaluation.
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain and manage extramural funding.
  • Basic Life Support and/or Advance Cardiac Life Support Certification.
  • Eligibility for clinical privileges at The Queen’s Health Systems.
  • Experience as an attending physician in an academic ambulatory care setting, preferably at Queen Emma Clinic.
