Starting Pay:
New hires start within our entry-to-market range, depending on experience and qualifications. The starting range for the position is $27.32 - $30.02/hour and will increase each year for longevity and cost of living adjustments.

Full Pay Range:
Each position also has a full wage range that reflects potential growth over time, including annual increases for longevity and cost-of-living. The full range for the position is $27.32 - $31.83/hour.
  • Assist with designing and implementing data-driven asset management processes, establishing baseline monitoring data, developing and tracking long-term trends of recreational use, monitoring the Overall Condition Index (OCI) of managed assets, developing maintenance impact statements, and developing and publishing long-term management plans across the City of Missoula’s developed parks and trails.
  • Research and assist with the development of best management practices for developed and recreational amenities, infrastructure (assets), and resources.
  • Draft technical reports of findings; assist with the development of educational materials and management plans.
  • Seek out and administer grants and donations.
  • Conduct literature reviews; collect data with GPS units; manage GIS databases; conduct geospatial analyses; and create maps using GIS software.
  • Design and follow protocols for asset inventory, maintenance, and analysis of all collected data; present results to municipal, public, and private entities; develop user surveys.
  • Develop and maintain various partnerships to execute an expanded scope of asset-related recreational services.
  • Lead and facilitate various staff trainings and organize logistics; assist with developing procedures, goals and objectives.
  • Provide support in the daily operations of the department, including delivery of services, implementing approved plans, public outreach, education, volunteerism, etc.
  • Review the work of contractors to ensure specifications in the contract are met.
  • Collaborate with other City divisions and departments, local non-profits, local governmental agencies, neighborhood groups, and businesses on Developed Parks and Trails related projects and associated maintenance.
  • Lead the review and administration of Park Access Permits.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, based on training and qualifications.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of asset management, including design, construction, implementation methods, maintenance, management, and analyzing data.
  • Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, Missoula's Developed Parks and Trails system; Montana's native plants, invasive plants; and conventional, organic, and natural based land management practices.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of public administration, including budgets, planning, program development, fundraising, etc.
  • Knowledge of GIS principles, applications, and techniques for creating and editing spatial data and developing databases.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to promote, department safety considerations, City safety policies, OSHA standards and guidelines, and the American with Disabilities Act.
  • Skill in utilizing various computer software and databases, including Microsoft 365, various GPS, GIS systems, and the ability to learn job-specific applications and equipment.
  • Skill in creating maps using GIS software for print and web.
  • Skill in managing program-level tabular, statistical, and geospatial monitoring datasets.
  • Skill in safely operating various tools and other job-specific equipment.
  • Skill in organization, time management, and prioritizing with the proven ability to have keen attention to detail and accuracy in performing work with adherence to strict deadlines.
  • Skill in communicating, in person and writing, with the proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals.
  • Ability to research, analyze, and present GIS data in print and in web application formats.
  • Ability to train staff and end users in the use of GIS software.
  • Ability to create education, outreach, and public presentation content and materials.
  • Ability to administer external permits.
  • Ability to write and administer various technical reports and grants.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions while working independently with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to successfully explain complex technical information to diverse groups of people.
  • Ability to maintain current knowledge, developments, and trends related to specific areas of focus and/or assigned projects.
  • Ability to maintain and exhibit integrity and discretion in handling the confidential and sensitive information.
  • Ability to maintain and foster a culture of professionalism, adhere to departmental and City standards and specifications, and support a positive team environment.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts with facilitating outcomes while maintaining a calm demeanor.

Working Conditions:
  • Position requires the ability to lift and carry 50 lbs or less.
  • Work environment may involve occasional exposure to unavoidable weather conditions, occupational hazards, uneven terrain, and physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Position involves contact with citizens and traveling from site to site.
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to three (3) years of experience in asset management, geographical information systems (GIS), or another relevant field.
  • Must have a valid Montana driver’s license with a verified acceptable driving record or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
  • Experience working in Parks and Recreation preferred.
  • GIS certificate preferred.
