This position performs responsible skilled and technical work assisting in construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical transmission and distribution systems; does related work as required. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the Line Crew Leader.
Essential Job Functions- Assists with the installation, maintenance, and repair of low and high voltage electric transmission and distribution systems.
- Assists with the installation of overhead and underground primary and secondary cable, assists with installation of conduit, and installs caution tape over cables.
- Performs line work on de-energized and energized lines and attaches guy wires to poles.
- Locates damaged lines and poles, troubleshoots power distribution equipment, conducts voltage and amperage tests in system checks, and replaces and repairs fuses as needed.
- Operates aerial devices, digger derrick, cable tension equipment, trencher, and related equipment. Climbs utility poles.
- Loads and unloads gravel, dirt, timber, chemicals, and other materials, tools, and equipment. Digs trenches and ditches, cleans catch basins and drainage lines.
- Locates or assists with locating underground electric cables, natural gas lines, and connecting boxes.
- Trims trees from lines. Backfills and tamps fill material. Installs MOT devices.
- Picks up and delivers supplies. Keeps trucks supplied with tools and materials.
- Serves as stand-by and works trouble calls.
- Maintains, cleans, and repairs tools and cleans job sites after job completion.
- Follows safety rules and regulations and uses safe work practices.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Education and Experience:High school diploma or equivalent.
Special Qualifications:Must obtain CPR certification and a CDL driver's license valid in the State of Florida within six months of employment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: - Ability and willingness to learn to set poles, maintain transformers, cabinets, switches, and install primary and secondary cables.
- Ability to follow oral directions.
- Ability to observe safety rules and regulations.
- Ability to perform manual work and physical stamina to withstand working under adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to climb poles.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
Physical DemandsThe work is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
- Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
- Climbing: Ascending or descending terrain, ladders, stairs, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
- Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
- Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
- Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
- Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
- Hearing: Required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
- Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
- Manual Dexterity: Picking, pinching, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
- Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul, or tug objects in a sustained motion.
- Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward, or outward.
- Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

Work EnvironmentWork is performed primarily outdoors under extreme weather and environmental conditions such as cold, heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and exposure to oils, dust, dirt, fumes, and noises.
