About the Role
We are seeking an experienced, commercially sophisticated attorney to serve as Associate General Counsel and global head of the Commercial & IP Legal function. This is a senior leadership role at one of the world's fastest-growing audio entertainment companies, with responsibility for owning the commercial legal infrastructure, building and developing a high-performing team across the world, and shaping the IP strategy for a rapidly expanding library of licensed and user-generated content.
Reporting to the General Counsel, this attorney will serve as a key member of the legal leadership team and a senior strategic partner to business leaders across content, product, marketing, and partnerships. The role spans content licensing and acquisition, marketing and brand arrangements, vendor contracts, UGC platform legal frameworks, and AI-adjacent content arrangements. It also encompasses development and execution of a coherent global IP strategy covering rights clearance, chain-of-title, creator agreements, IP enforcement, and the intersection of AI-generated and human-authored content.
The ideal candidate is a builder who also closes transactions - someone who can design a legal function and do the work inside it simultaneously. This person thinks in systems, not just deals, and is energized by working with creative and entrepreneurial internal clients who push boundaries and move fast. They bring a point of view on what smart commercial and IP legal infrastructure looks like for a global content platform, and they are prepared to execute it. Critically, the right candidate is already operating with AI tools as a core part of their legal practice - using them for contract review, playbook development, risk flagging, and research - and will build that operational maturity into their team.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, build, and develop the global Commercial & IP Legal team across the world, setting standards for quality, pace, judgment, and ownership across the function.
- Own all commercial legal work end-to-end: content licensing and acquisition agreements (licensed catalogue and UGC), distribution and platform partnerships, brand and marketing agreements, vendor and services contracts, and cross-functional product support.
- Develop and execute a global IP strategy aligned with Pocket’s content business - covering copyright portfolio management, rights clearance and chain-of-title, creator agreement frameworks, IP enforcement, and the intersection of AI-generated content with traditional rights structures.
- Build and continuously improve the commercial legal infrastructure: scalable playbooks, standard-form agreement libraries, tiered approval and escalation frameworks, and AI-assisted workflow tools that keep the team fast and the business protected.
- Proactively identify legal risks in business plans, product roadmaps, and market expansion decisions - not just reviewing documents, but getting upstream on issues before they become problems.
- Develop UGC content legal frameworks as Pocket’s creator ecosystem grows, covering platform terms, creator agreements, content moderation legal standards, IP ownership and licensing, DMCA and IT Act compliance, and AI-generated content sourced from the creator pipeline.
- Drive IP enforcement strategy across key risk surfaces including audio piracy, unauthorized distribution, content scraping, and training data misuse, working with enforcement counsel and internal teams to execute at scale.
- Collaborate with Privacy/AI Legal, Finance/Tax/Business Finance, and other teams on cross-cutting matters, and coordinate regional outside counsel relationships across the US, India, EU, and other markets.
- Develop team members through clear growth frameworks, meaningful delegation, direct feedback, and a culture of ownership.
- Build the commercial legal function with AI as a core operating tool - establishing norms, training, and workflows that make intelligent use of AI for contract review, playbook drafting, risk assessment, and legal research.
About You
- J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar membership in the jurisdiction in which you practice
- 8+ years of legal experience with substantial depth in commercial transactions and IP, including significant in-house experience.
- Demonstrated experience managing or developing in-house legal teams - setting direction, building systems, and developing lawyers.
- Strong transactional experience in content licensing, media rights, or entertainment law, including comfort with complex, multi-party rights structures.
- Working knowledge of copyright, trademark, and related IP frameworks relevant to a content-driven business, including UGC legal considerations.
- Experience building or meaningfully improving commercial legal infrastructure - playbooks, templates, approval processes, or legal ops workflows.
- Proven ownership mentality: a track record of identifying and resolving issues proactively, managing diverse workloads independently, and delivering outcomes without close supervision.
- Comfort operating in fast-moving, high-growth environments where priorities shift, processes are incomplete, and judgment calls are frequent.
- Active, demonstrated use of AI tools in legal practice - not aspirational, but operational.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder skills, with the ability to advise both technical teams and senior business leaders clearly and directly.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience at a consumer tech, audio/video streaming, gaming, or digital entertainment company.
- Familiarity with AI-generated content legal issues, training data use, and the evolving intersection of AI and copyright law.
- Experience with UGC platforms or creator economy legal frameworks, including platform terms, DMCA at scale, creator IP ownership, and monetization structures.
- Experience managing legal work across multiple global jurisdictions, or coordinating global legal teams in a multi-entity structure.
- Experience with IP enforcement programs at scale, including DMCA, IT Act mechanisms, and platform-level enforcement workflows.
