Adjunct Instructor - Central Sterile Processing

The Central Sterile Processing Adjunct Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in central sterile processing concepts and practices. This role prepares students for entry-level employment in sterile processing departments by providing didactic instruction, hands-on skills training, and professional mentorship consistent with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and certification expectations.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Deliver classroom, laboratory, and/or hybrid instruction in central sterile processing topics, including:
    • Infection prevention and control
    • Decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, and sterilization
    • Sterilization methods and monitoring
    • Instrument identification and handling
    • Case cart preparation and distribution
    • Storage and distribution of sterile supplies
    • Quality assurance and documentation
    • Regulatory standards (AAMI, AORN, CDC, OSHA, The Joint Commission)
  • Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with course objectives, program outcomes, and certification standards (e.g., CRCST).
  • Demonstrate proper sterile processing techniques and equipment usage in a lab or simulated environment.
  • Evaluate student performance through exams, skills check-offs, assignments, and competencies.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and student progress.
  • Provide timely feedback, academic support, and mentorship to students.
  • Promote professionalism, ethical conduct, and workplace readiness.
  • Ensure a safe learning environment and compliance with institutional policies.
  • Collaborate with program faculty, coordinators, and administration as needed.
  • Participate in curriculum review, program assessment, and accreditation-related activities when requested.

Education and Experience
Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • CST (Certified Surgical Technologist) certification or CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) certification.
  • Minimum of two years of recent experience working in a sterile processing department or Surgical Technologist experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current sterile processing standards and best practices.
  • Ability to teach adult learners effectively in classroom and laboratory settings.
Preferred
  • Associate degree or higher in a related healthcare field.
  • Teaching or precepting experience in a healthcare or academic setting.
  • Experience with curriculum development or student evaluation.
  • Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS) and educational technology.
