The Linn County Alcohol & Drug Program provides prevention and treatment services to adults and youth. The Prevention Specialist position is a specific position within the Addiction Specialist classification. The individual in this position will work closely with other prevention staff to provide youth substance use prevention, problem gambling prevention and mental health promotion and prevention services to youth, adults, schools, and local communities.

The Prevention Specialist delivers evidence-based prevention education, implements prevention programs, and collaborates with schools, community partners, and other prevention staff to advance youth and community health.

The duties listed are intended only as illustrative examples of the various types of work that may be performed by individuals in this classification. Any of the following duties may be performed. These examples are not necessarily performed by all incumbents and do not include all specific essential functions and responsibilities the incumbent may be expected to perform.

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

School-based prevention education: Teach evidence-based curricula, including Botvin’s LifeSkills Training program for fourth and sixth grade students, coordinate with school staff, and support classroom activities that promote healthy decision-making, emotional regulation, and resilience.
Community education and training: Provide presentations and trainings for youth, adults, and community groups on prevention topics, coordinating schedules and organizing professional-level trainings when appropriate.
Program support and planning: Support implementation of assigned portions of the Linn County Prevention Plan, participate in coalition and community initiatives, and assist with prevention program planning and evaluation.
Data collection and analysis: Gather and analyze prevention data to guide programming, track outcomes, and evaluate initiatives.
Reporting and occasional grant support: Prepare and submit accurate and timely reports to County, State, and other funding sources; occasionally assist with grant applications as needed.
Relationship-building and collaboration: Establish and maintain professional relationships with schools, community partners, program staff, and other stakeholders to effectively implement prevention initiatives.

Addictions Specialist 1:
Bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, counseling, or related field is required. Professional or supervised practicum-level experience of at least one year in providing addiction treatment is required. Any satisfactory equivalent combination of experience, education and training which demonstrates the ability to perform the work described may be acceptable. Classification as an Addictions Specialist 1, in addition to the requirements listed in the Job Summary above requires (for clinical positions) Oregon certification as a Certified Prevention Specialist. Exceptions to this can be made for otherwise qualified candidates, with more than the minimum professional experience, who register for certification and demonstrate the ability to be successfully certified within two years of starting employment.

Addictions Specialist 2:
Master’s degree in psychology, social work, counseling, or related field is required. Three years professional or supervised practicum-level experience (pre- or post-Master’s degree) in providing addiction treatment services (for clinical positions) or in providing prevention services (for prevention positions) is required. Any satisfactory equivalent combination of experience, education and training which demonstrates the ability to perform the work described may be acceptable, including a bachelor’s degree with five years’ experience in addiction treatment (for clinical positions) or in prevention (for prevention positions). Classification as an Addictions Specialist 2, in addition to the requirements listed in the Job Summary above requires (for clinical positions) Oregon certification as a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor - Level One for clinicians with a master’s degree or a Certified Prevention Specialist for clinicians with a Bachelor’s degree.

Addictions Specialist 3:
Master’s degree in psychology, social work, counseling, or related field is required. Two years post-Master’s Degree supervised experience in a similar position, and four years supervised experience (pre- or post-Master’s degree) in addiction treatment. Classification as an Addictions Specialist 3, in addition to the requirements listed in the Job Summary above requires Oregon licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor or a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, Licenses Clinical Social Worker, or certification as a Certified Prevention Specialist.

Must be able to pass a criminal history check and possess or obtain a valid Oregon driver's license with an acceptable driving record that meets the County's requirements.

This is a non-supervisory position. Lead work and coordination of work of others is not a typical function assigned to this position. Incumbents in this position may provide training and orientation to newly assigned personnel.
