  • Full Time Nights- (72 hours bi-weekly)
  • 6:30pm - 7:00am
  • Every 3rd weekend rotation

The Orthopedic Surgery Unit at Good Samaritan Hospital is a 21-bed unit dedicated to providing exceptional care to adult and geriatric patients recovering from a wide range of orthopedic procedures. From joint replacements to complex fracture repairs, the team specializes in helping patients regain mobility and independence. This fast-paced, hands-on unit combines expert surgical recovery care with a patient-centered approach, ensuring optimal outcomes and a smooth transition from hospital to home. This unit has garnered the esteemed Gold Seal Certification from The Joint Commission as an Orthopedic Center of Excellence for all total joint surgeries because of our high, exceptional performance on the outlined metrics and quality patient experience our patients receive.

Nurses on the Orthopedic Surgery Unit enjoy a collaborative and supportive work environment, with 12-hour shifts and self-scheduling. Shifts are planned on a 6-week rotation, with weekend and holiday rotations thoughtfully incorporated. Flexibility is key, and the team works together to accommodate individual needs while maintaining excellent patient care. New team members begin with a 6-week orientation alongside a dedicated preceptor, receiving personalized guidance and support tailored to their experience level. This comprehensive onboarding process builds confidence in managing orthopedic recovery protocols, mobility assistance techniques, pain management, and patient education.

The nurse-to-patient ratio on the unit fosters a manageable workload and a strong focus on quality care: Day Shifts: 1:4-5; Night Shifts: 1:5-6

Job Requirements:

  • 2 years High School Education
  • Age 17 with work permit
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Reading and math ability appropriate to the position
  • Experience as an STNA, PCA or ACT strongly preferred

Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs and documents basic patient care tasks under RN supervision; maintains competency in trained skills, completes assignments on time, and seeks clarification when needed.
  • Maintains a safe, clean environment by reporting hazards, following Infection Control policies, completing safety event reports, and adhering to safety and emergency procedures.
  • Communicates effectively and respectfully with patients, families, and team members; reports patient information and assignment issues promptly; documents observations accurately; collaborates with the healthcare team and uses the chain of command appropriately.
  • Supports unit operations by performing supply, equipment, and environmental tasks; reports shortages or equipment problems and ensures supplies/equipment are ready for the next user.
  • Demonstrates accountability and commitment to selfgrowth; identifies areas for improvement and supports organizational and unit changes.
