Accounting Technician II - BU

The Seattle Fire Department is seeking a regular, full-time Accounting Technician II to join the Payroll Unit of the Finance Department. The Accounting Technician II will work with a team that performs tasks related to payroll as well as accounts payable, accounts receivable, deposits, FLSA reporting, legal inquiries, and benefits. This position will report to the Payroll Supervisor.

The position will operate out of Seattle Fire Department’s Headquarters building in Pioneer Square. Some remote work will be available.

  • Process bi-weekly payroll transactions related to compensatory time, overtime pay, holiday pay, acting pay, and unpaid time off.
  • Process bi-weekly payroll transactions and update payroll records for occupational and non-occupational leaves, funeral leave, and emergency leave.
  • Provide guidance on filling out timesheets and timesheet submittal.
  • Administer reporting system for compensatory time in compliance with Federal Fair Labor Standards Act limits.
  • Assist with review of submitted timesheets and resolve entry errors and coding errors.
  • Respond to questions from staff related to payroll and policies.
  • Sort and file payroll records; maintain electronic and hard copy payroll files.
  • Calculate payroll adjustments, including but not limited to retroactive pay.
  • Provide back-up assistance to other Account Technicians in the Payroll Unit.
  • Assist with preparing retroactive salary payments for over 1000 employees during contract changes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Two years of previous accounting/booking experience or one year as an Account Technician I is required. A combination of education/experience/training which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class will be considered.

A successful candidate will also possess the following experience and skills:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds in a complex, paramilitary work environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of City Payroll procedures, Human Resources procedures, and Personnel policies.
  • Experience with Workday or similar payroll systems.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Access, Excel, Outlook, Word, etc.).
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently, managing multiple projects and priorities while ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.

The full salary range for this position is $35.00 - $39.18 per hour.
