Accounting Director
$150-175k plus bonus
Minneapolis, MN (Mostly Remote but in the Twin Cities)
The Director of Accounting is responsible for the success of the Accounting Department consisting of domestic and international General Accounting, Accounts Payable, Payroll and many Tax functions. The Director of Accounting is responsible for the leadership and execution of the function's strategy, teaching and role modeling the culture, values, and behavior expectations, a high performing and continuously developing accounting team which produces excellent results, financial responsibility to the function, and continuous support, communication, and collaboration with peers. The Director of Accounting reports to the VP of Finance.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a high-level leader. Be accountable for the purpose, strategy, and results of the Accounting Department within the Accounting and Finance department.
- Set and share a clear vision and objectives and effectively lead the team that provides operational expertise in the Accounting Department functions to implement effective strategy. Share information about what is being worked on with others in leadership and as needed.
- Lead people company wide. Inspire, role model, teach, and hold others accountable to the desired culture, values, and expected behavior. Develop high performing leaders and contributors. Develop and maintain relationships internal and external to the business that provide a path to business success.
- Use strategically important measurements to evaluate, as well as subjective evaluations as appropriate.
- Maintain awareness of the economic landscape and how it may influence the function and business. Stay abreast of developments within and outside the industry pertaining to the accounting profession.
- Assess opportunity and risk in a continually changing environment and set direction to achieve growth while mitigating risk exposure for the business.
- Serve as the Accounting leader sponsor for major projects. Drive the components of accounting pertinent to the project's successful execution.
- Contribute to the development of strong leadership teams and organizational structures across the company and within the accounting department which result in high performance, high engagement of staff, and ongoing development at all levels to ensure long-term leadership pipelines.
- Oversight of the Accounting Team and function.
- Provide hands-on leadership support to the accounting team including mid- to high-level operational work as needed.
- Ensure financial statements are completed accurately on a timely basis each month and partner with VP of Finance in presenting to leadership to drive results cross departmentally.
- Lead the Annual Audit of Financial Statements with external accounting firm required by the company’s financial institution.
- Support the preparation of annual tax returns for the company and Affiliates for Federal and State filings.
- Ensure proper internal controls are in place across the company-
- Strategically and prudently utilize capital and other resources allocated to the accounting department.
- Build and maintain healthy external relationships important to the Accounting function.
- Expense optimization and budget adherence.
- Capital expenditure analysis and tracking
- Oversight of the Accounts Payable team and function.
- Ensure that all Accounts Payable are paid timely, efficiently and that all available discounts are taken within terms
- Establish and maintain efficient, automated Accounts Payable systems.
- Establish and maintain SharePoint databases for all contracts and corporate records
- Other tasks and responsibilities as assigned
Requirements
- 10+ years of professional experience in the function of leadership, including being on a leadership track, accompanied by a 4-year college degree in a relevant field or equivalent work experience.
- CPA credential and public accounting experience preferred.
- Progressive professional responsibility with desire to learn and work in a changing environment.
- Demonstrated skills and experience turning vision and strategy into executable business plans, as well as proven ability to lead strategies and projects through to completion which includes process development, relationship-building, and organizational, communication, and technical skills.
- Proven success leading teams and representing the entire company, including role modeling the culture, values, and expected behavior.
- Business savviness including adaptability, resilience, and an orientation toward change, mutually beneficial negotiating skills, the ability to anticipate outcomes and make appropriate adjustments, adapt leadership and communication styles appropriate to certain people or situations, and verbal and written communication skills including public speaking.
- Expertise and business acumen in all areas of the accounting function including General Accounting, AP and Tax, including leadership of these areas.
- Experience leading the accounting component of multiple significant projects.
