Academic Cornea Ophthalmologist

University of Florida College of Medicine | Gainesville, Florida

The University of Florida Department of Ophthalmology is seeking a fellowship‑trained Cornea and External Disease Ophthalmologist to join its academic faculty. This full‑time position offers a pure cornea practice within a nationally respected academic program and a traditional faculty model.

The Position

The Cornea Service at the University of Florida serves as the primary regional referral center for complex corneal disease, supporting a diverse and high‑acuity case mix. This role is intentionally structured to allow the incoming faculty member to remain fully subspecialized in cornea and external disease, without the need to maintain a general ophthalmology or cataract‑driven practice.

Clinical care, surgery, and teaching are all delivered within a single, centralized academic site, supporting efficiency, collaboration, and continuity of care.

Position Highlights

  • 100% cornea and external disease practice with sustained subspecialty focus
  • High‑volume academic referral program with complex anterior segment pathology
  • Balanced academic schedule with 4.5 clinical days per week and protected administrative time
  • Light call schedule averaging 2–3 weeks per year, with residents and fellows taking first call
  • Dedicated operating room access with no minimum case requirements
  • Clinic and ambulatory surgery center co‑located at one academic site
  • Strong mentorship culture with opportunities for academic advancement and leadership

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive academic compensation with guaranteed base salary and RVU‑based productivity incentives
  • Additional compensation available for optional call coverage
  • Sign‑on and relocation support available
  • Comprehensive benefits package including health insurance options, malpractice coverage with tail, and university retirement plans
  • Eligible employer for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF)
  • CME allowance and support for professional development

Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited Cornea Ophthalmology fellowship
  • Board certified or board eligible in Ophthalmology
  • Comfortable managing complex corneal and anterior segment pathology
  • Interest in academic medicine, teaching, and collaborative practice
