Human Services, a department of the City of Seattle, funds and operates programs and services that meet the basic needs of the most vulnerable people in our community – families and individuals with low incomes, children, domestic violence and sexual assault victims, people experiencing homelessness, seniors, and persons with disabilities.
The Youth Development Counselor (YDC) reports to the Seattle Youth Employment Program Senior Supervisor, within the Youth & Family Empowerment Division. This position provides high quality youth development and career navigation, and exploration support for youth and young adults participating in SYEP’s six-month pre-employment program (Learn and Earn), and the Internship Program in the summer. The Youth Development Counselor will provide pre-employment workshops, internship placement, and support services.
When necessary, this position is expected to work evening and weekends. This position will be in Seattle at 810 3rd Avenue, Suite 420 and travel throughout the City of Seattle or work virtually in accordance with public health guidance in response to current COVID-19 guidelines.
- Manage a caseload of up to 60 youth and young adults, ages 16 -24.
- Maintain accurate electronic and hard copy case files.
- Provide pre-employment workshops, internship placement, and support services to over 400 youth.
- Provide participants ongoing assistance with employability skills, including resume writing, career exploration, interviewing techniques, critical thinking, teamwork and communication.
- Assess employability of participants and assists participants in improving skills; counsels participants on vocational and educational needs; conducts group and individual training sessions on job market skills.
- Conduct site visits to worksite agencies and ensure that personnel and employment laws, practices, and procedures including Department of Labor Regulations and City of Seattle and Human Services Department policies, are adhered to.
- Maintain close communication with outreach and partnership coordinator to ensure smooth transition of interested employers.
- Act as a liaison between participant and worksite agency. Investigates any concerns or complaints and coordinates a mutually agreeable solution. Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Assist in the creation of, and participate in, an SYEP Alumni Network to enhance career navigation support.
- Support in outreach events for recruitment of prospective participants into both Internship Program and the Learn and Earn program.
- Provide technical support and be a part of a team to review submitted applications by prospective employers and program participants.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: B.S./B.A.in Social Sciences, Human Resource Management, Business Administration, or a related field is required (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
Experience: Requires three years of experience with managing caseloads, performing skills assessment, pre-employment training, counseling, placement and retention services for youth and young adults.
Certification/License: Washington State Driver’s License.
OR: An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the position duties.
The fully pay range for this opportunity is $43.37 - $50.42 an hour.
