Summary:

Reports to the Western History Center Archivist and provides administrative and operational support for the Western History Center.

Responsibilities:

Assist the Western History Center Archivist in all aspects of archival management, including selection and appraisal, accessions, arrangement and description, preservation, and reference. This position will also assist in supervising and directing student employees and community volunteers.

  • Assist the Archivist-Librarian with implementing the repository’s access policy.

  • Provide reference assistance including conducting research and educating users on how to use the repository.

  • Page materials from closed storage following best practices for handling reference materials

  • Monitor reading room usage and enforce reading room policies.

  • Record usage statistics.

  • Assist with material processing and preservation projects.

  • Assist with stacks/holdings maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree from an accredited institution

  • Effective oral and written communication and public speaking skills

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in a related field

  • Previous customer service experience

  • Attention to detail

  • Experience or the ability to learn how to conduct research using primary and secondary sources and the systems that support their discovery

  • Experience with or the ability to learn how to operate and train users to use reading room technology such as scanners and digital microfilm readers

Work Environment:

Typical work environment is a public library space, classroom, and office setting requiring normal safety precautions. Short periods of time will be spent outdoors traveling between campus buildings in various weather conditions.


Physical Demands:

Employee must be able to stand for long periods of time, speak, hear, use hands and fingers to handle materials and use computer, feel, and reach with hands and arms. Employee will regularly work with office technology including computers, telephones, and other office productivity and IT equipment. Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds may be required (books, office supplies, etc.). Work is usually performed during the normal workday, however, occasional early morning, late evening and weekend work may be required.
