The Public Works Department’s Water Operations and Maintenance Division is responsible for maintaining City infrastructure. The Division is looking for its next Lead Maintenance Worker. The successful candidate will possess strong organizational skills, great customer service, and the ability to collaborate with the Division’s other Lead and Supervisor to form a cohesive leadership team. They should also be comfortable leading a team of Maintenance Workers and contractors, and knowledgeable about the regulations that guide water system operations.

Note: This is an in-person position. The schedule is Monday – Thursday, 6am – 4:30pm.

  • Prioritize, schedule, assign, and oversee maintenance,
  • Repair, construction, installation, and inspection activities for public works and water utility systems.
  • Provide field support, leadership, and journey level expertise while training and instructing staff on proper work methods, safety practices, equipment operation, and water utility maintenance.
  • Develop and implement operational policies, procedures, and safety programs, including environmental and hazardous materials training.
  • Inspect work to ensure compliance with city, state and federal regulations; identify maintenance needs; estimate project time and materials; and procure necessary resources.
  • Manage contractors and vendors, including selection, scheduling, oversight, quality verification, and ensuring adherence to work agreements.
  • Maintain accurate records, databases, maps and work orders for infrastructure, signage, markings, and water utility assets.
  • Coordinate and support interagency relationships, provide customer service to the public and partner agencies, and respond to complaints and inquiries.
  • Manage emergency response efforts by deploying crews and arranging equipment and resources.
  • Notify residents, businesses and agencies regarding upcoming projects and coordinate associated work activities.
  • Assist in developing and implementing water system operation and maintenance plans; oversee construction inspections for system upgrades, capital projects and private development work.
  • Provide input on personnel matters and identify ongoing training and professional development opportunities for staff.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalency and five (5) years progressive responsibilities within public utilities or general construction.
  • Valid Washington State Driver's license required


Additional licenses and certificates that may be required depending on the area in which incumbent is assigned:

  • Class A Commercial Driver's license
  • Washington State Department of Transportation Traffic Flagging Certification preferred
  • First Aid/CPR
  • Water Distribution Manager I
  • Asbestos Pipe Certification (preferred)
  • Confined Space Entry and Attendant Certification (preferred)
  • Water Distribution Manager II (Preferred)
  • Cross Connection Control Specialist (preferred)
