Veterinary ReceptionistThis position works in our veterinary center performing reception and clerical duties, including answering phones, scheduling appointments, and checking clients in and out, as well as with patients, providing vaccines, preventatives, and assisting with procedures. This employee will be cross-trained in different departments based on the needs of the veterinary center and BHS.Primary Responsibilities:Customer service to exams appointments, vaccine appointments, surgery, and walk-in clientsIntake surgery patientsAnimal handlingUnderstand the goals of the veterinary center and work as part of the reception team to achieve those goalsAppropriately handle a large call volume with exceptional communication skillsObtain a thorough medical history of patients prior to appointmentHelp clients determine which tests, vaccines, and preventatives are appropriate for their pet, in regard to medical historyCorrectly fill, label, and dispense medications as prescribed by the veterinarianGive both oral and injectable medications to multiple animals throughout the dayAdminister vaccinesFollow established safe and humane protocols in the handling of animalsDischarge surgery patients and thoroughly explain aftercare instructionsExplain possible side effects of anesthesia and surgeryMedication demonstration to clientsFollow cross contamination protocolFacility maintenance and cleaning i.e laundry, mopping, sweeping, etc.Learn and apply both public and shelter preventative protocolsFiling and data entryManage animal databases to keep accurate, professional, and legible records, including all forms and data entry of animal information, status, location, etc.Manage multi-line phone systemProcess and maintain accurate financial transactions and records or services providedFollow all established safety procedures and protocolsTake immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, client, customer, animal, or the organization at riskWear required clothing, identification, and job-specific safety gearDemonstrate understanding of animal diseases and transmission to other animals and peopleRequirements:MINIMUM of 1 year Receptionist experience (does not need to be in a veterinary setting, but that is preferred)6+ months of veterinary assistant experience or certificate of completion in a veterinary assistant programAbility to lift a minimum of 50 poundsPrefer experience/certificate of courses completed in animal medical fieldDemonstrates an attitude that encourages enthusiasm and support for co-workers from all BHS departments, volunteers and the publicEnsure work stations are kept clean and maintained daily; represent BHS Brand in a positive manner with a professional personal appearanceWork cooperatively with all team members, board members, supporters, other partner agencies, and volunteers, recognizing the talent and commitment they bring to the SocietyMaintain and communicate BHS values to the public, volunteers and fellow team membersStrong interpersonal relationships and alliance-building skillsExperience in animal welfare, shelter operations or high volume spay/neuter clinic a plusCommitment to the mission, values, goals, and success of the Butte Humane SocietyExperience with humane animal handling and restraint techniques of healthy, ill and feral animalsExperience in caring for and handling animals in a safe, effective and humane manner, especially larger and possibly untrained petsComfortable working in a shelter environment and willing to accommodate animals in the workplaceComputer-literate and able to master veterinary software as applicable to BHS operationsKnowledge of animal welfare, breeds, behaviors, and humane training.Ability to understand and communicate pertinent medical information with colleagues and clientsSelf-motivated and able to initiate and complete tasksProven ability to exercise good judgment when dealing with the public and staff, able to exercise good judgment when dealing with confidential informationWorking Conditions:The work environment can be dirty, smelly, noisy, stressful, and demanding.Exposure to potentially dangerous chemicals, animals, parasites, and infectious diseases is possible.Subject to animal bites and scratches while handling animals.Regularly lift and carry animals weighing up to 50 pounds.Work can be physically and emotionally demanding.Work Schedule: This position is Full-Time (40 hours/week).
