Job Description

This Medical Assistant position supports an Internal Medicine clinic connected to a hospital, providing direct patient care and clinical support in a fast-paced, team-based environment. You will work closely with providers and another Medical Assistant to manage a steady patient volume, performing rooming, vital signs, point-of-care testing, documentation, and coordination of patient appointments and referrals. This role offers a Monday–Friday daytime schedule with no weekends or holidays, a supportive culture focused on high-quality patient care, and strong opportunities for professional growth.

Responsibilities

  • Room patients and prepare exam rooms for providers, ensuring a smooth and efficient patient flow.
  • Obtain and document vital signs, including blood pressure, weight, temperature, and other relevant measurements.
  • Document patient signs and symptoms and complete medical history documentation accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Set up for and assist providers with office exams and procedures, following clinical protocols and provider direction.
  • Perform point-of-care testing such as urinalysis, strep, flu, pregnancy tests, and other tests as directed by the provider and based on specialty needs.
  • Collect height, weight, body mass index (BMI), and other pertinent clinical information, and update immunization records as needed.
  • Schedule tests, radiology exams, and specialist appointments as requested by providers, ensuring all details are accurately entered into the EMR.
  • Enter all check-in and check-out information in the EMR to support accurate patient records and billing processes.
  • Complete prior authorizations as needed and notify the office referral specialist when an insurance referral is required.
  • Perform phone triage during scheduled times, addressing patient medical questions, providing test results as directed, coordinating medication refills, and completing call-backs to patients.
  • Fax, call, or transmit prescription refills as directed by providers, ensuring accuracy and adherence to protocols.
  • Support walk-in patients by performing triage, obtaining blood pressures, collecting histories, performing urinalyses, and gathering other information to relay to the provider.
  • Serve as a resource to visitors, providers, and staff by greeting everyone promptly and courteously and providing clear, helpful communication.
  • Consistently support the mission and values of the organization through professional, respectful, and patient-centered interactions.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by clinic leadership or providers to support overall clinic operations.
  • Conduct all activities in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and standards, including Blood and Body Substance Precautions and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate data entry in EMR and related systems to ensure complete and up-to-date patient records.
  • Collaborate closely with providers and fellow team members to ensure coordinated, high-quality patient care.

Essential Skills

  • Active certification as a CMA (AAMA), RMA, or CCMA.
  • Successful completion and graduation from a recognized medical assistant training course or equivalent experience.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Hands-on experience with medical assisting and direct patient care in a clinical setting.
  • Ability to room patients efficiently and prepare them for provider evaluation.
  • Proficiency in obtaining and recording vital signs, including blood pressure, temperature, weight, and related measurements.
  • Experience using electronic medical records (EMR) or electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • Skill in appointment scheduling and coordinating tests, radiology exams, and specialist referrals.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Competence in phlebotomy, including blood draws and use of a centrifuge, as required by clinic protocols.
  • Ability to perform point-of-care testing such as urinalysis and other in-office tests.
  • Strong data entry skills with attention to accuracy and detail.
  • Capability to stand for long periods of time during the workday.
  • An upbeat, positive, and outgoing attitude with a willingness to step in where needed to maintain consistent patient flow and positive patient interactions.
  • Clear and professional communication skills with patients, providers, and staff.
  • Commitment to following Blood and Body Substance Precautions and other safety and infection control standards.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 2–3 years of experience working as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) is preferred.
  • Experience in family practice, Internal Medicine, or women’s health settings is highly desirable.
  • Experience with point-of-care (POC) testing beyond basic urinalysis, such as strep, flu, and pregnancy tests.
  • Familiarity with multiple EMR systems or strong adaptability to new EMR/EHR platforms.
  • Bg in hospital or clinic environments, particularly in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, or Gastroenterology (GI) settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team-based care model alongside providers and other medical assistants.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks, including scheduling, triage, and documentation.
  • A customer-service mindset with a focus on creating a welcoming, friendly experience for patients and visitors.
  • Interest in long-term career growth within a healthcare network, with openness to learning and taking on new responsibilities.

Work Environment

This role is based in an Internal Medicine clinic within a hospital setting in Franklin, operating in a temperature-controlled, modern clinical environment. You will work closely with two providers and one other Medical Assistant, supporting a steady patient volume. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with no weekend work and holidays off. The daily flow typically includes walk-in patients from 8:00 a.m. to 8:50 a.m., scheduled appointments from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., a one-hour lunch break, appointments from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and closing activities completed by 5:00 p.m. There is minimal overtime required. The clinic uses electronic medical records and standard medical equipment such as vital sign monitors, phlebotomy supplies, and centrifuges to support patient care. Staff enjoy easy, free access to parking with no need for parking garages or navigating downtown traffic. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Franklin, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.22 - $23.00/hr.
