Job Title: Transmission & Distribution (T&D) Superintendent
Job Description
The Transmission & Distribution (T&D) Superintendent leads field operations for assigned transmission and distribution construction projects to ensure safe, timely, and profitable completion. This role plans, organizes, and supervises specific portions of construction work, with a focus on high voltage transmission lines and substation facilities. The T&D Superintendent coordinates construction schedules, oversees subcontractor performance, and maintains continuity of job progress while maximizing field efficiencies. This position plays a key leadership role in safety, quality, and client satisfaction throughout the life of each project.
Responsibilities
- Plan, organize, and supervise specific portions of construction work for assigned areas of transmission and distribution projects.
- Oversee field construction activities for high voltage transmission lines, including steel and wood structures, drilled piers, spread footings, grounding, and environmental requirements.
- Supervise construction activities related to substations, including equipment, structures, electrical systems, and controls.
- Provide overall supervision of construction efforts, including safety, craft productivity, efficient use of materials and equipment, materials management, scheduling, engineering coordination, and contractual performance.
- Manage and verify subcontractor contractual compliance for designated T&D construction activities.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with clients, subcontractors, architect/engineer representatives, and other contractors.
- Collaborate with project management to develop and implement project procedures, working documents, and standards.
- Review and authorize purchase requisitions, field design change requests, and related documentation under the supervision of the Construction Manager and Project Manager.
- Take full responsibility for project site safety by reviewing and auditing site-specific safety documentation, including Pre-Task Analyses (PTAs) and Task Safety Observations (TSOs) on a regular basis.
- Complete daily field reports and capture daily photos to document construction progress and site conditions.
- Use subcontractors’ three-week look-ahead schedules to assess upcoming work activities, identify concerns, and adjust work plans as needed.
- Develop marked-up and as-built drawings to support the production of record documents, and respond to RFIs with assistance from the Assistant Project Manager or Field Engineer.
- Direct and manage subcontractors to maintain adherence to the established project schedule, and track and verify progress based on installed quantities and work hours.
- Verify that material deliveries meet project specifications, are stored properly, and receive required preventative maintenance or temporary heating, coordinating with the Materials Manager as necessary.
- Coordinate with the QA/QC Manager to ensure all welders on site are properly qualified for project welding requirements.
- Witness equipment setting and alignment to confirm compliance with drawings, specifications, and quality standards.
- Walk down systems prior to, during, and after hydrostatic testing to verify compliance with drawings and specifications, and sign off on completed system testing and restoration.
- Develop and maintain punch lists for items that are incomplete or out of compliance, and drive timely resolution.
- Confirm that field crews and subcontractors use the most current drawing revisions and project documents.
- Understand and execute the defined project scope and any changes that occur, ensuring field change orders are properly documented and implemented.
- Oversee craft supervision and project staffing levels to meet schedule and productivity goals.
- Provide oversight of project site material and tool management to support efficient and safe field operations.
- Ensure daily field construction activities comply with established company policies, procedures, systems, and project requirements.
- Supervise and direct the physical construction of the project through daily coordination of all field activities, subcontractor direction, and enforcement of code and specification compliance.
- Read, interpret, and apply information from isometric drawings, structural drawings, and P&IDs to guide field construction.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support successful project execution.
- Comply with all company policies, procedures, and standards at all times.
Essential Skills
- Extensive experience in construction management or craft supervision on transmission and distribution (T&D) projects.
- Ability to plan, organize, and supervise complex field construction activities for high voltage transmission lines and substations.
- Strong leadership skills with proven experience directing craft labor and subcontractors in the field.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety with a strong safety experiencea and implementing site-specific safety programs.
- Proficiency in managing construction schedules, including coordination of subcontractor activities and use of look-ahead schedules.
- Ability to interpret and apply isometric drawings, structural drawings, and P&IDs in a construction environment.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to interface effectively with clients, subcontractors, and project teams.
- Experience overseeing materials management, equipment utilization, and field logistics on construction projects.
- Ability to monitor and enforce contractual compliance for subcontractors on T&D-related activities.
- Competence in developing and reviewing field change orders, RFIs, and as-built documentation.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and related computer applications.
- Ability to meet company driving requirements for travel to and from project sites.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree and 7 years of construction management experience or craft supervision experience on T&D projects, or
- Associate degree and 9 years of construction management experience or craft supervision experience on T&D projects, or
- High school diploma or GED and 11 years of construction management experience or craft supervision experience on T&D projects.
- Experience overseeing high voltage transmission lines, including steel and wood structures, foundations, and grounding systems.
- Experience managing substation construction, including equipment installation, structural work, electrical systems, and controls.
- Familiarity with environmental requirements related to T&D construction projects.
- Experience coordinating with QA/QC personnel to ensure proper qualifications and compliance for welders and other specialized trades.
- Experience in developing punch lists, performing system walk-downs, and witnessing equipment setting and system testing.
- Experience documenting daily field activities, including reports, photos, and progress tracking.
- Ability to collaborate with project managers, construction managers, assistant project managers, field engineers, and materials managers in a team-oriented environment.
Work Environment
This role is primarily field-based on active transmission and distribution construction sites. The T&D Superintendent works on and around high voltage transmission line corridors and substation facilities, frequently outdoors and in varying weather conditions. The position involves regular site walks, system walk-downs, and close coordination with craft labor, subcontractors, and project management staff. Work hours may vary based on project needs and schedules and can include extended hours to meet critical milestones. The role requires regular use of computers and Microsoft Office Suite for reporting, documentation, and communication. The superintendent operates within established company policies, procedures, and safety standards, and must consistently promote and enforce safe work practices across all site activities. Appropriate field attire and personal protective equipment are required in all construction areas.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract position based out of Houston, TX.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $60.00 - $65.00/hr.
