Community Law SC is seeking a trial attorney to work from our Stevens Point office serving courts in Portage, Wood, Adams, Marathon, and Waupaca Counties. Our firm has offices in Stevens Point and Madison Wisconsin providing criminal defense, civil rights, and related legal services. We maintain an ethic of service to the community, competent representation, and care for our clients.
Responsibilities
You will primarily represent indigent clients in criminal courts in Wisconsin. Work cases thoroughly with a manageable caseload and workload at pay commensurate with public sector jobs. Assist existing firm attorneys with complex litigation and maintain your own caseload. Responsibilities include representing clients at initial appearances, preliminary hearings, status conferences, evidentiary hearings, jury trials, administrative hearings, and all other criminal court appearances. You will draft, edit, and file motions and briefs on various issues including suppression, bail/bond modification, and dismissal. You will develop your own relationships with your clients and coordinate the work of an investigator and paralegal working on your cases. There will be limited opportunities to work in various areas of civil litigation and to develop your own practice areas.
Training and Practice
This position involves significant multi-year on the job training. Learn alongside trial attorneys currently serving 20 Wisconsin counties. Every hearing, filing, and conversation is an opportunity to develop a relationship of trust and respect with your client, to advocate for their interests, protect their rights, and to hold the State and courts accountable. This role is intended for a person interested in developing their practice as a lawyer in a supportive and challenging environment.
Qualifications
Applicants must be licensed to practice law in the State of Wisconsin or able to become licensed before beginning work. There is no minimum experience required. Applicants must have humility, practiced attention to detail, and a willingness to learn, be challenged, and to ask questions.
Compensation & Benefits
Starting salary range: $70,000 to $85,000 depending on criminal law experience.
Benefits: Health Insurance and Direct Primary Care.
Time off: 6-12 weeks depending on employee selected work schedule. (Avg 35 hours/week = 6 weeks PTO, Avg 40 hours/week = 12 weeks PTO).
Annual bonuses & raises.
Attorneys at Community Law SC rarely work more than 40 hours in a week except when in trial.

While prices rise everywhere, Central Wisconsin remains affordable. Home ownership is accessible at the starting salary of this position. While larger rental companies in Central Wisconsin are attempting to raise rents significantly, a savvy renter may find quality single family homes and apartments for rent at as little as half the rates in Madison.
