Job Description

The Traveling Superintendent oversees and coordinates construction activities on multiple short-duration projects throughout the year, ensuring work quality, safety, and schedule adherence. This role focuses on managing subcontractors, handling project documentation such as RFIs and change orders, and supporting the installation of specialized structures, including helipads on buildings. The position requires regular travel to project sites and offers the opportunity to work on unique and technically interesting construction projects.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and monitor subcontractors on active construction sites to ensure work meets project specifications, quality standards, and timelines.
  • Coordinate daily on-site activities and communicate clearly with subcontractors and project stakeholders.
  • Manage and process Requests for Information (RFIs) to resolve design or scope questions in a timely manner.
  • Prepare, track, and support change orders, ensuring all scope changes are documented and communicated appropriately.
  • Support and oversee installation work related to steel erection and MEP systems, drawing on practical field experience.
  • Ensure safe work practices on site and promote adherence to all safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Monitor project progress and report status, issues, and risks to the appropriate internal contacts.
  • Travel to and work on approximately six projects per year, typically spending two to three weeks on each project.
  • Collaborate with office-based teams when not traveling to review upcoming projects, documentation, and plans.
  • Contribute to the successful delivery of specialized projects, including the installation of helipads on buildings.

Essential Skills

  • Construction background with hands-on experience as a foreman or skilled laborer.
  • Practical experience in steel erection.
  • Practical experience with mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems.
  • Ability and willingness to travel approximately four months per year for project work.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple short-duration projects each year.
  • Ability to read and understand construction plans and project documentation.
  • Effective communication skills for coordinating with subcontractors and project stakeholders.
  • Capability to oversee general labor and installation activities on site.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience overseeing installation work on complex or specialized structures, such as helipads, is beneficial.
  • Experience managing RFIs and change orders in a construction environment is an advantage.
  • Ability to work in an office setting when not traveling, particularly if based near New Jersey.
  • Comfort working both independently on site and collaboratively with office-based teams.

Work Environment

This role is primarily field-based, with work performed on active construction sites or while traveling to project locations. The Traveling Superintendent typically supports around six projects per year, with each project lasting approximately two to three weeks. The work involves overseeing on-site activities such as steel erection, MEP installations, and general labor, often on technically interesting projects, including helipad installations on buildings. The position requires approximately four months of travel per year. When not traveling, candidates local to New Jersey may work in an office environment to support planning, coordination, and project documentation. The work environment is fast-paced and project-driven, with a strong focus on safety, coordination, and quality execution.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Parsippany-Troy Hills, NJ.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $48.08 - $57.70/hr.
