Bellevue’s Transportation Department is seeking to fill a Transportation Engineering Intern position within the Traffic Engineering group. This position will support the City’s efforts to plan, design, and operate safer and more comfortable transportation facilities for people walking, biking, rolling, taking transit and driving throughout Bellevue.
This internship provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working with engineers on projects that improve transportation safety and accessibility. The intern will assist with conceptual design, data management and analysis, field reviews, and evaluation and implementation of multimodal safety improvements such as pedestrian crossings, bicycle facilities, speed management strategies and intersection control treatments. The position will also provide exposure to the planning, design, and operational considerations involved in advancing the City’s Vision Zero goals through Safe System principles.
This internship offers students the opportunity to contribute to real projects that improve safety and mobility in Bellevue’s transportation system while gaining practical experience in the day-to-day work of a municipal transportation engineering team.
This position is expected to start in spring 2026.
The following list includes potential tasks and responsibilities for this position.
Engineering Support: Provide engineering and technical support to staff working on multimodal transportation planning, design, and operational projects.
Multimodal Transportation Planning: Assist with planning and policy efforts to improve multimodal connectivity and safety throughout Bellevue, including identifying opportunities for new and existing pedestrian crossings, bicycle facilities, transit access improvements and other safety enhancements.
Project Engineering: Support engineers in developing conceptual plans and estimates for pedestrian and bicycle improvements. Assist with preparing conceptual layouts using AutoCAD or similar design software.
Engineering Studies: Assist with studies related to pedestrian crossings, bicycle facilities, transit access and intersection safety. This may include reviewing crash data and safety trends, conducting field reviews, video observations and preparing summary reports and recommendations.
Field Reviews and Site Assessments: Conduct field visits to evaluate existing roadway conditions, pedestrian accessibility, bicycle facilities, transit facilities and other safety and operational needs. Document observations and assist with identifying potential improvements.
Community Member Requests: Support engineering staff in reviewing and responding to concerns from Bellevue community members related to transportation safety and operations.

Flexible/Hybrid Working:
A hybrid work schedule is available for this position after an orientation period working in the office after hire. Remote work for this position is subject to department's operational needs and will be discussed with candidates during the selection process. Full-time remote work is not an available option. Once hired, employees must reside in the State of Washington and within reasonable commuting distance to Bellevue City Hall.
