Job Title: Tool and Die Technician
Job Description

The Tool and Die Technician sets up and operates standard tool room equipment to machine, maintain, and repair dies, molds, and related tooling used in die casting operations. This role works from blueprints and drawings, uses precision measuring tools, and performs both routine and complex tooling repairs to ensure high-quality castings and efficient production. The technician diagnoses tooling issues, performs preventive and corrective maintenance, and upholds strict quality and safety standards while adapting to changing production needs.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate standard tool room equipment, including lathes, milling machines, and grinders, to machine parts for die casting equipment.
  • Make repairs and changes to dies and molds, ensuring they function correctly and reliably in production.
  • Clean die cavities using abrasives, make gate changes, remove drag, straighten cores, and drill water lines as needed.
  • Work from blueprints and drawings to fabricate and repair tooling components such as slides, ejector pins, cores, and pinions.
  • Use precision measuring tools to verify dimensions and ensure tooling meets specifications.
  • Analyze tooling difficulties, diagnose required repairs, and determine appropriate corrective actions.
  • Repair dies while they are still set in the casting machine when required, including grinding in overflows and gates.
  • Change unit dies and remove castings stuck in dies safely and efficiently.
  • Dismantle and reassemble dies, including performing more complex repairs on trimming tools.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on tools, dies, and related equipment to minimize downtime and extend tool life.
  • Interpret and work from schematics and drawings to troubleshoot mechanical and basic electrical or electro-mechanical issues related to tooling.
  • Use hand tools and pneumatic tools to complete maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Operate a forklift occasionally to move tooling and materials, in accordance with safety procedures and training.
  • Inspect tooling and finished work for quality, defects, and deviations from specifications, and take corrective action when needed.
  • Take responsibility for the quality of work and appropriately resolve unusual operating conditions or tooling issues.
  • Follow established safety procedures and maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Use computers effectively for work instructions, documentation, and basic data entry related to maintenance and production.
  • Modify work schedule and duties as needed to accommodate changing production and company needs.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned in support of tooling, maintenance, and production operations.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum of one year of experience in a similar position, preferably in tooling, die maintenance, or a related mechanical role.
  • High school diploma or equivalent, with the ability to read and understand English language work instructions.
  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to diagnose and repair tooling and mechanical issues.
  • Ability to set up and operate standard tool room equipment such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders.
  • Experience with tool and die work, including repair and maintenance of dies, molds, and trimming tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and schematics.
  • Proficiency in using precision measuring tools to verify dimensions and tolerances.
  • Basic computer skills for accessing work instructions, documentation, and simple data entry.
  • Basic math skills to perform measurements, calculations, and adjustments.
  • Ability to use hand tools and pneumatic tools safely and effectively.
  • Understanding and adherence to safety procedures in a production and toolroom environment.
  • Ability to work independently, make sound decisions, and manage time effectively.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Preferred education includes a two-year technical degree or equivalent training in a related field.
  • Preferred experience includes one year of on-the-job instruction and/or completion of apprenticeship programs in tooling, maintenance, or machining.
  • Strong computer and math skills beyond basic proficiency are highly valued.
  • Demonstrated strong mechanical aptitude through success with increasingly complex tooling or maintenance assignments.
  • Experience with preventive maintenance practices for tooling and equipment.
  • Familiarity with electro-mechanical systems and basic electrical troubleshooting as it relates to tooling and machinery.
  • Experience in a toolroom, machining, or injection or die casting environment is beneficial.
  • Ability to read and work from schematics for troubleshooting and repair.
  • Comfort with machine set up and machine operating in a production environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality in all aspects of work.

Work Environment

The role is based in an open production environment that can be warm during the summer months. The setting includes active manufacturing areas, toolroom equipment such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, and other machinery used for die casting and tooling work. Safety is a core priority, and employees must follow all safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment. Steel-toed boots and safety glasses are mandatory, and the dress code does not allow shorts or cut-off sleeves to ensure adequate protection. The environment involves hands-on work with tools, machines, and occasional forklift operation, requiring awareness of surroundings and adherence to safety protocols at all times.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of LE SUEUR, MN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $28.00/hr.
