Job Title: Tool and Die Machinist

Job Description

The Tool and Die Machinist is responsible for constructing and repairing tooling, machining special or short-run parts, and assisting with the build, design, and repair of dies, jigs, and tools using blueprints, drawings, and schematics. This role involves fabricating small quantities of prototype, modified, or specialty parts and requires working with close tolerances. The machinist will apply knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, and machining procedures to produce quality precision parts and tools. Additionally, the role includes repairing equipment, machines, and performing maintenance, including repairs or modifications to tools and dies.

Responsibilities

  • Compute dimensions of assembly and plan sequence of operations.
  • Set up and operate machine tools such as lathes, CNC, milling machines, EDM, and surface grinders to fabricate parts.
  • Smooth and polish flat and contoured surfaces of parts or tools using scrapers, abrasive stones, files, emery cloth, or die grinder.
  • Set or program heat-treating furnaces as required for proper heat treat operations and perform proper heat treat processes.
  • Organize supply needs and documentation needed for tooling maintenance and duplication.
  • Inspect for quality in all aspects of different jobs.

Essential Skills

  • Proficiency in tool and die, mechanical, blueprint schematics, machining, grinding, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with lathe setup, milling machine, EDM machine, surface grinding, and fabrication.
  • Capability to program and operate various machine tools.
  • Knowledge of heat treatment, machining, tooling, laser cutter, drill press, and machine operating.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required; 2-year certification in tool and die strongly preferred.
  • Ideally 5+ years experience in stamping and/or die construction, though a combination of schooling and experience may be considered.
  • Required manufacturing experience.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of tooling, presses, and machine shop equipment.
  • Strong math skills required.

Work Environment

Dress code includes jeans or work pants, t-shirts without holes, and safety gear such as shoes, hearing, and eye protection. The facility is non-temperature controlled but comfortable, although it may become warm in the fabrication area during summer months.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $52000.00 - $72800.00/yr.
