This is a project-based employee role supporting the initial development phase of our autonomous vehicle platforms. Development phases of this nature typically span up to project completion (typically 2–4 years), though scope and duration are driven by business needs.
JOB SUMMARY
The Test Operations Research Analyst III uses advanced analytical and mathematical methods to optimize the design of experiments and data collection strategies used to verify and validate ASI's autonomous robotic systems. This role develops statistically sound test plans and data collection frameworks that enable engineering teams to evaluate system performance, reliability, safety, and readiness.
As a Level III contributor, this role independently designs and executes complex testing and analytical efforts, collaborates closely with engineering and test teams, and translates large datasets into actionable insights that improve robotic system design, autonomy performance, and operational reliability across multiple industries.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Collaborate with program, engineering, and test teams to understand concepts of operation, use cases, and requirements in order to design effective test and data collection strategies
- Develop statistically and mathematically sound tests, experiments, models, and simulations to predict robot system performance, reliability, and potential failure points
- Design and manage end-to-end data collection plans incorporating robot telemetry, instrumentation data, tester observations, and human-in-the-loop inputs
- Analyze large datasets from tests to identify trends, establish key metrics, and provide data-driven insights to engineering teams
- Define and track key performance indicators such as autonomy percentage, mean time to intervention, and other system performance metrics
- Identify, procure, calibrate, and manage test instrumentation and measurement systems used during validation testing
- Support development of custom test environments including hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and software-in-the-loop (SIL) systems to simulate real-world conditions
- Design, develop, organize, and execute test plans, test suites, test cases, and data collection plans across hardware, software, and integrated robotic systems
- Work with SDETs and other test engineers to develop and maintain automated testing frameworks using scripting languages such as Python or C++
- Perform hands-on testing and debugging of embedded, mechanical, electrical, software, and communication systems on prototype and production robotic platforms
- Work with engineering and quality teams to determine root causes of failures and deliver prioritized, data-driven recommendations
- Author data collection plans, analysis reports, and technical findings that support system validation and engineering decision-making
ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE, JOB SKILLS
- Bachelor's degree in Operations Research, Mathematics, Statistics, Systems Engineering, or a related quantitative field
- 7–10 years of experience in a technical analysis, operations research, data analytics, or test engineering role supporting complex systems
- Strong expertise in statistical analysis, experimental design, and analytical problem solving
- Proficiency with Python, C++, MATLAB, or other analytical and scripting tools
- Experience analyzing large datasets and translating results into actionable engineering insights
- Strong understanding of systems engineering principles, requirements traceability, and product development lifecycles
- Familiarity with development and traceability tools such as Jira, JAMA, Git, or similar platforms
- Ability to collaborate effectively across software, systems, mechatronics, and test engineering teams
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present technical information clearly to varied audiences
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's degree or PhD in Operations Research, Mathematics, Statistics, or another relevant discipline
- Prior experience working with robotics or autonomous systems
- Familiarity with robotics frameworks such as ROS or ROS2
- Experience with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), software-in-the-loop (SIL), or simulation testing environments
- Understanding of embedded systems, microcontrollers, and communication protocols such as CAN, I2C, or SPI
