Under the direction of the assigned manager provide technical support for all aspects of computer and audio/video use. The Technology Specialist is responsible for supporting the needs of users of District computer systems, hardware and software, and audio/visual equipment and software.

  • An associate's degree in Electronics, Engineering or Computer Science or related field AND
  • Two years professional experience using various computer operating systems applications software and hardware including experience in local area network environments and audio/video systems or any combination of training, experience, and/or education that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Demonstrated Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of an in-depth understanding of the hardware evaluation process, an in-depth understanding of software evaluation, selection, installation and testing processes; superior verbal and written communication skills; the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with staff, students and others.
  • Knowledge of analog and digital electronics theory and practices.
  • Basic knowledge of theory and operation of communications systems, LAN hardware and software and tasks associates with LAN administration.
  • Knowledge of various computer operating systems and application software) and the operations of various computers and their components/peripheral devices.
  • Knowledge of repair and troubleshooting procedures for computers, printers, monitors, LAN's and WAN's, audio/video equipment and all associated accessories.
  • Basic knowledge of commonly used computer networking systems to include the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of such networks.
  • Knowledge of hardware and software evaluation process, selection, installation and testing procedures.
  • Demonstrate a sensitivity to relate to persons with diverse socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including the disabled.
  • Remain informed of emerging technologies.
  • Ability to use logical methods to evaluate varying technologies.
  • Ability to use appropriate testing equipment and/or software.
  • Ability to use hand tools as required to perform job duties.
  • Ability to identify and repair faults to the board level.
  • Ability to arrange for off?site computer and audio/video equipment repairs, when necessary.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, students and others.
  • Ability to write clear, concise instructions and explanations and keep accurate records.
  • Ability to work independently under minimum supervision.
Language Skills:
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents.
  • Ability to write original material for publication that conforms to prescribed style and format, such as user documentation and procedures.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise and complete statistical reports.
  • Ability to communicate with district faculty, staff and students as well as outside vendors to define and clarify the requirements for telecommunications, networking and data communications hardware and software and problem resolution.
Mathematical Skills:
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of algebra and discrete mathematics.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability:
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to understand and analyze user requirements.
  • Ability to design, plan, develop and recommend appropriate solutions to district computer needs and to provide technical expertise
Certificates, Licenses,Registration:
  • Valid California driver's license.

  • The work assigned to this classification is typically performed in a computer center environment. While performing the duties of this classification, the employee regularly works at a computer terminal and keyboard for long periods of time and is exposed to the hazards of working with video display terminals. The work environment involves frequent interruptions, fast paced deadlines and multiple priorities and is moderately noisy. Duties may require the employee to work at nonconventional times as necessary.
