Director of Corporate Tax
Position Overview
The Director of Corporate Tax is responsible for leading the organization's corporate tax strategy, compliance, reporting, and risk management functions across United States federal, state, and local jurisdictions. This role provides strategic oversight of income tax, indirect tax, and other tax-related matters, ensuring compliance with evolving regulatory requirements while optimizing the company's tax position.
Reporting to senior finance leadership, the Director of Corporate Tax partners closely with Accounting, Treasury, Legal, Operations, and external advisors to manage tax planning initiatives, audits, and financial reporting obligations. This position requires a strong technical tax background, leadership capability, and the ability to operate effectively within a large, multi-entity organization.
Key Responsibilities
Tax Strategy & Planning
- Develop and execute corporate tax strategies aligned with business objectives and regulatory requirements
- Identify tax planning opportunities to optimize effective tax rate while maintaining compliance and risk controls
- Evaluate tax implications of acquisitions, cross-border transactions, restructuring, new business initiatives, and operational budgets
- Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and assess impact on the organization
Tax Compliance & Reporting
- Oversee preparation and review of United States federal, state, local income tax returns and related filings
- Ensure timely and accurate quarterly and annual tax provision calculations in accordance with GAAP (ASC 740)
- Oversee indirect tax compliance, including sales and use tax, property tax, and other transactional taxes as applicable
- Maintain appropriate documentation and controls to support audit readiness and compliance, including Transfer Pricing Documentation
Audit & Risk Management
- Lead and manage tax audits, inquiries, and examinations by US federal and state tax authorities
- Mitigate tax risks through proactive monitoring, internal controls, and process improvements
- Coordinate with external auditors and advisors regarding tax-related matters
Leadership & Cross-Functional Support
- Lead and develop internal tax team members, fostering technical excellence and professional growth
- Serve as a key advisor to senior finance leadership on tax-related matters
- Collaborate with Accounting, Treasury, Legal, IT, and Operations to ensure accurate data reporting and compliance
- Support integration efforts and alignment with parent company tax strategies and reporting requirements
Systems & Process Optimization
- Oversee tax-related systems, data management, and reporting processes
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, automation, and internal controls within tax operations
- Ensure appropriate documentation and process standardization across entities
- Perform other duties as assigned to support Finance and Corporate objectives
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; Master’s in Taxation preferred
- Certifications: CPA required
- Experience: 8+ years of progressive corporate tax experience, including leadership experience within a large, multi-state or multinational organization and/or public accounting firm
- Technical Expertise: Strong knowledge of US federal, state and Canadian income tax, ASC 740 tax provision requirements, and indirect tax considerations
- Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead and develop high-performing teams
- Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities with attention to detail
- Communication: Ability to clearly communicate complex tax matters to executive leadership and non-tax stakeholders
