Job Title: Systems Integration & Verification Engineer
Job Description

The Systems Integration & Verification Engineer will join an embedded controls team focused on Smart Work Tool applications for heavy equipment. In this hands-on role, you will develop and execute system-level verification tests, document and refine functional requirements, and support integration activities across embedded electronic control systems, including smart work tools, machine controllers, and operator displays. You will work both in the lab and on the machine to ensure reliable communication, robust system behavior, and high-quality documentation for current and future product releases.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute verification test procedures in a lab environment for integrated systems, including smart work tools, machine controllers, and displays.
  • Set up and perform full system bench testing with multiple components communicating together, focusing on complete system verification rather than only unit-level testing.
  • Monitor, analyze, and troubleshoot CAN data link communications on the machine, with particular emphasis on J1939 protocol behavior and performance.
  • Support on-machine testing at the primary facility and occasionally travel to a secondary site to assist with integration and verification activities.
  • Identify, document, and track software defects, ensuring clear communication of issues and supporting timely resolution.
  • Document functional requirements and system behavior, including reverse-engineering requirements from existing MATLAB Simulink models and observed machine behavior.
  • Work from incomplete requirements documents, refine and migrate content into AsciiDoc, and own the requirements documentation process from start to finish.
  • Organize and maintain electronic subsystem documentation so that system information remains accurate, current, and easy to navigate.
  • Collaborate with an experienced engineering team while working independently day-to-day, taking general direction and turning it into concrete test plans, results, and documentation.
  • Apply strong problem-solving skills to figure out new test setups, tools, and approaches with minimal direction, demonstrating initiative and follow-through.
Essential Skills
  • At least 3 years of engineering experience in a relevant field.
  • Hands-on experience with CAN data link communications and the J1939 protocol, including monitoring, analyzing, and troubleshooting CAN traffic on physical machines.
  • Proven experience with integrated system bench testing, performing full system verification across multiple communicating components such as smart work tools, machine controllers, and displays.
  • Strong documentation skills, including the ability to create, refine, and maintain clear and detailed technical documentation.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction, demonstrating high initiative and ownership of assigned tasks.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience using MATLAB, particularly in the context of understanding or working with Simulink models.
  • Ability to interpret and work with CAN Data Link and J1939 protocol as a firm, non-negotiable requirement.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with Vector CAN tools such as CANalyzer and CANape for analysis and troubleshooting of CAN networks.
  • Ability to read and interpret MATLAB Simulink models to understand system behavior and derive functional requirements.
  • Familiarity with C and C++ programming languages.
  • Experience with embedded C development in electronic control systems.
  • Experience migrating and maintaining requirements documentation, including moving content from Word documents into AsciiDoc or similar formats.
  • Demonstrated ability to take broad guidance and independently plan, execute, and complete complex technical tasks.
  • Experience working on or around heavy equipment, embedded controls, or similar electro-mechanical systems is beneficial.
  • Local availability is advantageous due to the hands-on nature of lab and on-machine testing and the minimal travel expectations.
Work Environment

You will work in a collaborative engineering environment focused on industry-leading heavy equipment technology. The role combines lab-based bench testing with on-machine testing at a primary facility, with occasional travel to a secondary site. Day-to-day work involves interacting with embedded electronic control systems, smart work tools, machine controllers, and operator displays, using technologies such as CAN and J1939, MATLAB/Simulink, and Vector tools like CANalyzer and CANape. You will be part of an experienced engineering team that provides general direction while expecting you to operate with a high degree of independence and initiative. The position is structured as a long-term contract with a globally recognized original equipment manufacturer, offering the opportunity to work on cutting-edge smart work tool applications in a professional, hands-on environment. Dress expectations align with a typical engineering and lab setting that includes time spent both at a desk and around heavy equipment and test benches.
