Job Title: Systems Engineer – System Integration Lab (SIL)

Job Description

This role is a hands-on Systems Engineer position supporting a mature program that has completed Critical Design Review and is entering an intensive system integration and verification phase. You will work primarily on the right side of the V-model, focusing on integrating software, firmware, and hardware in a System Integration Lab (SIL), developing and automating test procedures, and validating system-level requirements. This position is ideal for an engineer who enjoys direct interaction with hardware, test equipment, and lab environments while driving rigorous system-level verification and validation.

Responsibilities

  • Execute right-side V-model systems engineering activities, including system integration, verification, and validation for a complex, hardware-centric system.
  • Work daily in a System Integration Lab (SIL) to integrate software, firmware, and hardware components into a cohesive system.
  • Interface directly with hardware, test racks, and lab equipment to support integration and troubleshooting activities.
  • Develop detailed test protocols, procedures, and verification plans to confirm compliance with system-level requirements.
  • Automate test procedures by writing Python-based scripts for regression, overnight testing, and manual verification workflows.
  • Support verification of approximately 2,000 system-level requirements, ensuring comprehensive coverage and traceability.
  • Use and troubleshoot serial, JTAG, and Ethernet interfaces during integration and test activities.
  • Collaborate closely with SIL, hardware, firmware, and software teams to identify, analyze, and resolve integration issues.
  • Analyze test results to assess system functionality, identify anomalies, and drive corrective actions.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics and hardware documentation to support debugging and design understanding.
  • Support networking-related system verification activities, including testing of Ethernet and TCP/IP-based functionality.
  • Apply systems engineering rigor in an embedded and edge computing environment to ensure reliable system performance.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of lab processes, test automation, and integration workflows.

Essential Skills

  • Active Top Secret (TS) security clearance.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related technical field.
  • Demonstrated experience operating on the right side of the V-model, with a focus on integration, verification, and validation.
  • Hands-on experience working in a hardware-focused integration lab or System Integration Lab (SIL) environment.
  • Proven ability to interface with hardware, operate and configure test racks, and troubleshoot system-level issues.
  • Experience writing structured test procedures, verification plans, and automation scripts for complex systems.
  • Proficiency in Python scripting for test automation and data analysis.
  • Experience working with serial interfaces, JTAG, and Ethernet connections during integration and test.
  • Solid understanding of networking fundamentals, including Ethernet and TCP/IP concepts.
  • Ability to read, understand, and apply information from electrical schematics and hardware design documentation.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience supporting programs that have passed Critical Design Review and are entering integration and verification phases.
  • working with hardware-centric and embedded systems, including edge computing environments.
  • Experience managing and verifying large-scale system requirements sets, including maintaining traceability and coverage.
  • Familiarity with model-based systems engineering tools such as SysML and Cameo.
  • Exposure to DO-178C or similar safety- or mission-critical software development and verification standards.
  • Experience with Linux-based environments in support of integration and test activities.
  • Experience working in classified laboratory environments and following associated processes and protocols.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills to work effectively across SIL, hardware, firmware, and software teams.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret complex test data and drive resolution of technical issues.

Work Environment

This position is based onsite in Grand Rapids, MI, within a dedicated System Integration Lab (SIL) where software, firmware, and hardware are integrated and validated together. You will work in a hands-on lab environment that includes test racks, embedded hardware, networking equipment, and standard lab instruments for integration and troubleshooting.
