Job Description

The Surgical Technologist supports a high-performing cardiovascular surgical team by preparing and maintaining a safe, sterile operating environment and serving as an essential partner in complex surgical procedures. This role focuses on maintaining aseptic technique, managing the sterile field from setup through closure, and supporting surgeons and nurses during a variety of cardiovascular and other specialty surgeries. The position offers the opportunity to work in a collaborative acute-care hospital environment that values education, clinical excellence, and professional growth.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare the operating room at the start of the day by wiping down the room with alcohol and ensuring all equipment and furniture meet cleanliness standards.
  • Monitor and maintain cleanliness of all equipment and furniture throughout the day to support a safe and sanitary surgical environment.
  • Assemble, maintain, and protect the sterile field from initial setup through completion of each procedure, strictly adhering to aseptic and sterile techniques.
  • Open and set up surgical cases in a timely manner, ensuring all instruments, supplies, and equipment are properly arranged and ready for use.
  • Perform sponge, needle, and instrument counts (when applicable) in collaboration with another team member to support patient safety and prevent retained items.
  • Scrub in and assist with a variety of standard surgical procedures, including cardiovascular, neurology, orthopedic, and robotic surgeries, as well as other standard surgical care lines.
  • Support scope processing, decontamination, and sterilization workflows to ensure instruments and equipment are properly cleaned, processed, and ready for use.
  • Apply advanced knowledge of cardiovascular procedures, including aortic bypass surgery, endovascular aneurysm repair, cardiac bypass surgery, and valve replacement or repair.
  • Maintain strict aseptic technique during all phases of surgery, anticipating the needs of the surgeon and surgical team.
  • Collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and other surgical staff to support efficient, high-quality patient care.
  • Participate in on-call coverage during weekdays and weekends, responding within required timeframes to emergent and urgent surgical cases.
  • Contribute to a culture of safety, continuous improvement, and patient-centered care within the surgical services department.
Essential Skills
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of cardiovascular surgical experience, including exposure to aortic bypass surgery, endovascular aneurysm repair, cardiac bypass surgery, and valve replacement or repair.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in aseptic and sterile technique in the operating room.
  • Hands-on experience with scope processing, decontamination, and sterilization of surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Ability to scrub for a variety of standard surgical care lines, including cardiovascular, neurology, orthopedic, and robotic procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in performing sponge, needle, and instrument counts with another team member.
  • Ability to take call and respond within required timeframes for urgent and emergent surgical cases.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with a multidisciplinary surgical team.

Work Environment

This role is based in a 106-bed acute-care hospital recognized for high performance and strong patient satisfaction, offering a collaborative and high-performance surgical environment where technologists are valued partners in care delivery. The schedule consists of three 12-hour shifts per week, typically from 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The position includes weekday on-call coverage beginning after the scheduled shift at 7:00 p.m. and ending at 7:00 a.m. the following morning, as well as weekend on-call shifts from 7:00 a.m. Saturday to 7:00 a.m. Sunday or 7:00 a.m. Sunday to 7:00 a.m. Monday, with a 30-minute response time requirement. On-call time and any call-in hours are compensated at an enhanced rate. Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $50.00/hr.
