The Certified Surgical Technologist functions as an integral member of the surgical team, possessing expertise in sterile technique, human anatomy, and surgical procedures. They independently manage surgical instruments and supplies during operations and ensure patient safety throughout all phases of a procedure.

The Surgical Technician responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Independently maintains a sterile field throughout surgical procedures.
  • Anticipates surgeon needs and responds proactively.
  • Sets up surgical supplies, instruments, and solutions for diverse procedures.
  • Performs instrument, sponge, and sharp counts with circulator.
  • Drapes patients and prepares sterile sites.
  • Passes instruments efficiently during surgery.
  • Manages surgical specimens and labeling.
  • Prepares sterile dressings and assists with wound care.
  • Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
  • Leads or assists in terminal OR cleaning and prepping for next case.
  • May act as a mentor to junior staff or students.
  • May retrieve and transport medications (no preparation or administration).
  • Surgical Technologists may, if enrolled in an approved Surgical First Assist Program with current affiliate agreement with INTEGRIS, perform functions as a Certified Surgical First Assistant while completing program requirements
  • Reports to the assigned supervisor and Clinical Director.

  • Potential for exposure to infections and communicable diseases, blood and body fluids, electrical equipment, lasers, radiology and fluoroscopy equipment, needle sticks, suction splashing, chemicals, cleaning solvents, Stat IV, sterilization chemicals, hexacholorophate, betadine and sharps. Must follow standard precautions.
