MajorDuties

  • The Supervisory Police Officer serves as the first line supervisor overseeing squad and shift operations for assigned personnel and through superior supervisors at the National Zoological Park (NZP) Police and physical security program for the NZP and the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI). In this position, you will: Respond to and manage emergency or unusual incidents, and maintain involvement in community-oriented policing initiatives. Foster and maintain public trust through proactive engagement. Interview victims, suspects, and witnesses, prepare charging documents, and testify under oath in legal proceedings. Conduct operations to protect life and property. Interpret laws, manage crowd control and emergencies, and prepare detailed reports.

Must have completed certified law enforcement training through a state or federally accredited police academy or possess equivalent training that meets established legal standards and agency protocols. Applicants MUST provide training certificates and/or transcripts to verify completion of certified law enforcement training through a state or federally accredited police academy or equivalent. Failure to submit training certificates and/or transcripts will result in loss of consideration. Employment is subject to successful completion of a pre-employment requirements process that may consist of: structured interview, drug test, laboratory screening, medical evaluation, and background investigation. The incumbent must be able to qualify and maintain a proficiency in the use of weapons issued to him/her as part of his/her duty requirements.

Evaluations

Applicants for this position may be evaluated in multiple stages. The first stage is an evaluation of your responses to the online multiple-choice questions that assess your experience, education, and/or training for the job related competencies below: Law enforcement leadership skills. Ability to conduct criminal investigations, interviewing victims, suspects, and witnesses, preparing charging documents, and providing sworn testimony. Ability to maintain public safety through the effective interpretation and enforcement of laws, management of crowd control situations, and coordinated emergency response. Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria: Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above. Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above. Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree. This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Preference eligibles who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
