MajorDuties

  • The Supervisory Police Officer is responsible for the development, implementation, evaluation, and management of all facets of police operations activities at NZP and SCBI. The incumbent of this position personally and through subordinate supervisors manages the National Zoological Park Police and physical security program for the NZP and the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute. In this position, you will: Lead teams, sets short and long-term goals, and align unit priorities with department objectives. Supervise staff, coordinate operations, and foster collaboration across units. Duties include mentoring personnel, managing resources, ensuring policy compliance, and representing the department in community and interagency efforts. Oversee operations, lead large teams, and manage emergencies, citizen complaints, and security. Interpret policies, guide staff, and implement creative solutions to improve performance. Oversee and conduct criminal investigations, prepare charging documents, and interview victims, witnesses, and suspects to gather evidence. Enforce laws, manage diverse operations, and ensure public safety through crowd control and emergency response. Interpret regulations, detain suspects, and maintain order while working with diverse populations.

Must have completed certified law enforcement training through a state or federally accredited police academy or possess equivalent training that meets established legal standards and agency protocols. Applicants MUST provide training certificates and/or transcripts to verify completion of certified law enforcement training through a state or federally accredited police academy or equivalent. Failure to submit training certificates and/or transcripts will result in loss of consideration. Employment is subject to successful completion of a pre-employment requirements process that may consist of: structured interview, drug test, laboratory screening, medical evaluation, and background investigation.

Evaluations

Applicants for this position may be evaluated in multiple stages. The first stage is an evaluation of your responses to the online multiple-choice questions that assess your experience, education, and/or training for the job-related competencies below: Management Leadership Investigation Patrol Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria: Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job-related competencies above. Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job-related competencies above. Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements but does not satisfy most of the job-related competencies above to a substantive degree. This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three" but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Preference eligibles who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
