The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB): Independently Advancing Transportation Safety NTSB is an independent federal agency charged by Congress with investigating every civil aviation accident in the United States and significant events in the other modes of transportation-railroad, transit, highway, marine, pipeline and commercial space. We determine the probable causes of the accidents and events we investigate, and issue safety recommendations aimed at preventing future occurrences. In addition, we conduct transportation safety research studies and offer information and other assistance to family members and survivors for each accident or event we investigate. We also serve as the appellate authority for enforcement actions involving aviation and mariner certificates issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and US Coast Guard, and we adjudicate appeals of civil penalty actions taken by the FAA.

  • As a Supervisory Marine Accident Investigator - Deputy Director (Direct Hire),GS-1801-15, you will perform the following major duties: Identifies critical marine safety issues and works to improve accident investigation procedures. Provides authoritative advice to the OMS Director and staff on accident launch decisions and monitors time-critical activities in an accident investigation. Oversees the direction and technical accuracy of marine accident investigations and reports. Directs marine investigators during investigations and hearings, serves as a technical panel member during public hearings, Board Meetings and other events. Oversee the investigative staff throughout the accident investigation and report development process as they develop factual reports, analyses, findings, probable cause statements, and safety recommendations. Ensures that the agency project management system (SAFTI) is fully utilized, up to date, and accurate. Serves as Contracting Officer Representative (COR) as required. Communicates with the Office of Administration (AD) and the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to acquire and utilize resources in accordance with federal and agency rules. Maintains ongoing contracts for renewal of Office software and services as well as leading efforts for new products and services. Assists the Director with administration of financial systems, reviews expenditure, approves travel authorizations and vouchers, and approves time and attendance in accordance with Federal Travel Regulations (FTR) and agency rules.
