SUPERVISING CHEMICAL TREATMENT WORKER (FI-06) [1 vacancy]

TheDepartment of Parks and Recreation (DPR)is seeking a Supervising Chemical Treatment Worker for the Manana Warehouse. This position oversees the application of a wide range of horticultural chemicals, fertilizers, and soil amendments, and the maintenance and upkeep of athletic fields, asphalt parking lots, walkways, and the pressure washing of park facilities.

What You Will Do
  • Chemical Application, Turf Care & Pest Control – Supervise and coordinate turf spraying, fertilizing, and aeration using pesticides, fertilizers, and soil amendments; determine application rates and material needs; oversee equipment such as tractors, sprayers, spreaders, aerators, and top dressers; and apply pesticides to control pests including termites, cockroaches, ants, rodents, bees, and wasps.


  • Athletic Field & Grounds Maintenance – Plan, supervise, and assign work to utility crews in the upkeep of athletic fields, asphalt parking lots, and walkways; apply knowledge of field dimensions and specifications (football, soccer, baseball, softball); and oversee the safe use of power and hand tools including sod cutters, rollers, plate tampers, and demolition hammers.


  • Pressure Washing Operations – Oversee maintenance units in scheduling and coordinating the pressure washing of comfort stations and other facilities island-wide; plan cleaning operations for major city functions and supervise the use of high-pressure washers and attachments.


  • Administrative & Reporting Duties – Prepare daily dispatch sheets, calculate and submit material and labor costs, acquire purchase orders and requisitions, and complete daily, weekly, and monthly computer-based reports.


  • Perform other related duties as required.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show competence in the care, maintenance and beautification of landscaped areas, including the spraying and application of a variety of agricultural chemicals.

Applicable Skills Needed
  • Ability to assign, lay out, and supervise chemical treatment work; estimate time, labor, and material requirements; and ensure work is completed efficiently and safely.

  • Working knowledge of the classification, function, and use of agricultural chemicals, including fertilizers; methods of chemical application; common weeds, insect pests, plant diseases, and soil structures conducive to plant growth.

  • Knowledge of tools and equipment used in chemical treatment work, including proper operation and maintenance, as well as applicable hazards, safety procedures, practices, and precautions.

  • Ability to train and instruct subordinates in proper chemical treatment methods and safety practices; investigate, analyze, and resolve complaints; maintain records and prepare reports; and give and follow oral and written instructions while dealing effectively with others, including the general public.


LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
1. Possession of a valid Hawaii State driver's license (Type 3), prior to appointment.
2. Obtain a Hawaii Pesticide Applicator License, Category 3, prior to completion of probation.
