Superintendent – Caltrans Project (Culvert Replacement)

Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Superintendent to lead a Caltrans culvert replacement project involving multiple scopes including civil, roadway, and utility work.
This role requires a hands-on field leader with strong experience in safety, traffic control, and multi-trade coordination, capable of delivering high-quality work while maintaining strict compliance with Caltrans and regulatory standards.
The ideal candidate is a field-driven leader who:
Has successfully completed Caltrans or similar public works projects; can manage complex, multi-trade scopes simultaneously; prioritizes safety, compliance, and quality; and, is proactive, organized, and decisive under pressure
Project Scope
The Superintendent must have experience managing projects involving:
- Culvert replacement
- Tree removal and clearing
- Jack and bore operations
- Earthwork and grading
- Paving (asphalt and/or concrete)
- Striping and roadway markings
- Barrier installation (guardrail, K-rail, etc.)
- Electrical systems for traffic control (signals, ITS, lighting)
Minimum Qualifications
Experience
- 10+ years of experience in heavy civil construction
- Proven experience as a Superintendent on roadway or public works projects
- Experience managing multi-scope infrastructure projects
- Background in pipeline, storm drain, or culvert work
Traffic Control & Plans
- Experience with traffic control operations on public roadways
- Ability to read and interpret DOT standard plans and Traffic Control Plans (TCPs)
- Strong understanding of:
- Lane closures
- Detours and phasing
- Work zone safety requirements
SWPPP & Environmental Compliance
- Ability to ensure proper Experience overseeing SWPPP implementation and compliance
- installation and maintenance of BMPs
- Familiar with inspection, documentation, and regulatory requirements
Shoring & Equipment Management
- Experience with trench safety systems (shoring, trench boxes, plates, hydraulic shores)
- Ability to:
- Plan and manage rental shoring equipment
- Understand trench depth, soil conditions, and load requirements
- Coordinate equipment logistics, delivery, and cost control
Safety & Compliance
- Strong working knowledge of:
- Caltrans safety policies and manuals
- Cal/OSHA regulations
- California Code of Regulations (Title 8)
- OSHA 30 certification preferred, including:
- Excavation standards (Subpart P)
- Confined Space entry procedures
- Proven ability to:
- Conduct safety inspections
- Write safety reports
- Coordinate with safety engineers and inspectors
Leadership & Coordination
- Ability to supervise multiple crews and subcontractors
- Strong skills in:
- Scheduling and sequencing work
- Problem-solving in the field
- Maintaining quality and production
- Effective communication with:
- Project Managers
- Inspectors and engineers
- Public agency representatives
Work Schedule & Availability
- Must be able to work Monday–Friday, including:
- Day shifts and night shifts
- Willingness to work weekends as needed
- Flexibility to meet traffic control and project-driven schedules
Salary: $125 - $150K (based on experience)
