The Otay Water District Summer Internship Program gives students a real-world look at exciting careers in engineering, operations, technology, and public service. You’ll get hands-on experience, behind-the-scenes facility tours, and guidance from professionals who are shaping the future of water in our region. The program is currently scheduled for up to 16 hours per week from June 8, 2026, to approximately June 25, 2026. Studentsmust be available Monday through Thursday between the hours of 8 AM to 12:30 PM.

THE POSITION

In partnership with the Sweetwater Unified School District (SUSD) and under general supervision, Summer Interns will gain experience and an understanding of various functions of the water and wastewater industry, including Engineering, Operations, Finance, Customer Service, Human Resources, Information Technology, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Procurement, and Safety.

May perform any or all of the following duties:

• Participates in a variety of office and field duties designated by department managers.
• Performs computerized data entry.
• Observes project coordination and miscellaneous field tasks.
• Observes preparation and review of water, project reports, and studies.
• Observes facility and asset inspections and related activities.
• Observes customer service and meter-related activities.
• Observes public relations and public outreach activities.
• Observes evaluations and assessments of construction for water/sewer projects performed by project engineers.
• Works both individually and with a team of interns to write about the experiences gained each day.
• Sends, receives, and distributes communications and correspondence both internally and externally.
• Visits District facilities that may be located in remote areas.


Applicants under the age of 18 must obtain a work permit.

Experience:

Sweetwater Unified School District STEM student.


Education:

  1. Must be a Junior or Senior during the 2025/2026 school year within the Sweetwater Unified School District.
  2. Must be enrolled in a STEM-related course associated with Engineering, Architecture, or a similar field.
  3. Be in good academic standing.
